O Boeing 747 foi o Jumbo orixinal, capaz de levar dúas veces máis pasaxeiros e carga que os seus contemporáneos. Apareceu en abril de 1966 cun pedido de 25 avións para Pan Am. Boeing concebíu o prototipo tras perder un concurso fronte ao C-5 Galaxy de Lockheed para dotar ao exército dos Estados Unidos dun avión de carga e transporte estratéxico, unha vez que identificou un oco de mercado para un avión de grande capacidade.
