機械構造用炭素鋼と合金鋼は、８５０℃前後のオーステナイト相域まで加熱されて 急冷されてマルテンサイト相にする焼き入れ熱処理が施され、５５０〜６５０℃で 焼き戻し熱処理で機械的性質を調整して用いられてきた。
この焼き入れ・焼き戻し熱処理による鋼の機械的性質を調整することを、 調質熱処理と呼んでいる。
熱処理はエネルギーコストが高く、炉などの設備投資額も小さくないので 生産工程での省エネルギー化が熱心に図られている。一般に熱間鍛造によって 部品形状に成形された鋼製部品は、一度冷却された後に、８５０℃前後に加熱され 焼き入れされて、焼き戻しされる。オーステナイト相域までの再加熱と焼き戻しの 加熱を省略できればエネルギーコストは大幅に削除できるうえに、生産時間が 短縮される利点も大きい。最近は合金鋼の調質材並みの強靭性を持つ準非調質鋼 も開発されている。
焼き入れを施すので、焼き戻し熱処理を省略する“準”非調質鋼である。
