Takkirauta on rautaseos, jossa on noin 4-5% hiiltä. Takkirautaa saadaan masuunin tuotteena pelkistettäessä rautamalmia koksilla. Raudan sulaessa masuunin mahassa, se valuu kiinteän koksikerroksen läpi, jolloin siihen imeytyy jonkin verran hiiltä muodostaen eutektisen seoksen. Takkirauta on hyvin haurasta ja kovaa, ja sitä on mahdotonta muokata mekaanisesti. Niinpä metallurgisessa teollisuudessa takkirauta mellotetaan joko valuraudaksi, teräkseksi tai kankiraudaksi polttamalla siitä ylimäärähiili pois.

銑鉄（せんてつ、pig iron）とは高炉や電気炉などで鉄鉱石を還元して取り出した鉄のこと。昔は銑（ずく）と呼ばれた。純鉄の融点よりも低い融点の鉄-炭素系状態図の共晶点（炭素4.25%）で、鉄を取り出すため炭素含有量が高い。銑鉄は硬いが、衝撃を与えると割れやすいので、構造用材料には使われない。

Tackjärn, järn med en kolhalt på över 4%, framställt i masugn eller annan smältugn och gjutet till tackor, ibland även benäming på detta i flytande form. Tackjärnet kan ha varierande grad av kol i sig, därför varierar också smältpunkten. Tackjärn med kol löst i sig (så kallat vitt tackjärn) kan användas som råvara till framställning av gjutjärn, men i allmänhet är tackjärn råvara för vidare förädling innan metallen används.

生鐵，是將鐵礦石、焦炭、石灰石等原料投進高爐熔煉，由高爐直接煉得並在模中鑄造出來的鐵。生鐵的成分中，碳的比例相當的高，約在2.5~4.5%左右(碳鋼的含碳量為0.02~2.14%)，質地相當的脆，必須將其煉造成鋼以後才能有較多的用途。
