Pin on disc tester - Wear and friction measurement
The pin on disc test is used to measure the sliding wear and friction properties of thin coatings. The coated sample is the disc and a sphere, usually made of cemented carbide is the pin. The pin is loaded onto the coated disk using a known load set by the user and the coated disk is rotated at a controlled speed.
Pin on disc tester - Computer controlled
Most pin on disc testers are computer controlled and store the measured friction versus time or distance plots for future reference. After the pin on disc test has completed the amount of coating remaining in the wear track is measured using the ball crater technique and simple software gives the coating wear rate.

• counterpart pin: 5mm diameter WC-Co balls (standard)
• wear track diameter: 4 - 12mm
• load range: 2, 10, 20, 40, 80 and 100N
• friction force: measured from 0 to 50N via a load cell
• rotational speed: variable from 10 - 1000rpm
