Karakteristisk for dette sjiktet er at strukturene er for store til å beskrives av enkle atommodeller, samtidig er de for små til å beskrives av klassiske teorier, slik som klassisk termodynamikk, klassisk elektromagnetisme og newtonsk fysikk. Man kan dermed nærme seg nanoteknologi fra to kanter; enten nedenfra, ved å ta utgangspunkt i molekylær kjemi og fysikk for så å bygge strukturene større og mer kompliserte, eller ovenfra, ved å ta utgangspunkt i klassiske, makroskopiske modeller, men med tillegg av kvante-effekter og andre brudd på makroskopisk naturvitenskap.
