銑床在加工時，無論是刀具或是機器上的機件都會有複雜的交變應力，銑床於使用一段時間之後，或許因為機器本身穩固性鬆動，或許因為機件磨損或變形而使其精密度產生偏差，舉例來說:刀桿夾持長度及偏擺太多，原兩刃的刀其實只有1刃在切削，等於刀具使用的時效，只剩1/2而已；夾持精度越高代表刀具在尾端擺動量越小，也因此使用者可輕易達到工件所要求之精度或面粗度；另外，主軸偏擺會產生離心力會導致刀具在加工時，機台會晃動外，只用到單邊進行銑削造成刀具會磨損的嚴重或工件損壞，而轉速進給也會使刀具磨損。因此，機器經過一段時間的使用之後，就必須實施所謂的定期保養，定期保養校正可以確保銑床的精度及加工的品質，有高品質的機器，才能加工出高品質的工件。

鑽削後內孔一般都很粗糙，若在精密及光度上有較高的要求，降低其表面的粗糙度，通常需再 施予鉸孔加工，鉸孔工作所用的刀具即稱鉸刀。

鉸刀是用於孔的精加工和半精加工的刀具，加工餘量一般很小。鉸刀可用手動或裝在鑽床、車床、搪床等主軸上使用，在鉸削過程中，一般多為鉸刀一方面旋轉，一方面沿著軸向進給。鉸削生成的切屑量很小，故其切屑排出溝槽亦比鑽頭小。

基材是材料組成裏連續的材質，而補強材則為其中不連續的材質。複合材料種類繁多，應用最多的是纖維增強複合材料也叫做纖維增強塑膠(FRP)。高分子一般分為熱塑性塑膠(thermoplastic)及熱固性塑膠(thermoset)兩大類，纖維則有不同的材料及形式，常用的有玻璃纖維、碳纖維、Kevlar纖維、硼纖維…。

在銑削加工中，顫振是一種由刀具振動引起的加工不穩定現象，它會在工件表面留下顫振刀痕，而當刀具再次經過這些刀痕時，就會引起更大的振動， 在工件表面產生更深的刀痕，造成工件表面的波浪形和較大的粗糙度，並且加速刀具的磨耗 。如此惡性循環，終極會導致刀具或工件損壞。
