O método Rockwell é um método de medição direta da dureza, sendo um dos mais utilizados em indústrias. Este é um dos métodos mais simples e que não requer habilidades especiais do operador. Além disso, várias escalas diferentes podem ser utilizadas através de possíveis combinações de diferentes penetradores e cargas, o que permite o uso deste ensaio em praticamente todas as ligas metálicas, assim como em muitos polímeros.

The Rockwell scale characterizes the indentation hardness of materials through the depth of penetration of an indenter, loaded on a material sample and compared to the penetration in some reference material. It is one of several definitions of hardness in materials science. Its hardness values are noted by HR* where * is the letter for the scale used. Hardness' relation to strength is that both are measures of the pressure it take to get plastic deformation to occur in materials.

Zkouška tvrdosti podle Rockwella patří mezi statické zkoušky tvrdosti materiálu. Způsob jejího provedení je popsán a ujednocen normou ČSN 42 0373. Princip: zkušební těleso - indentor - vlivem přesně stanoveného zatížení vniká do zkoumaného materiálu, přičemž se z míry deformace povrchu tohoto materiálu (měří se hloubka vniku indentoru) usuzuje jeho tvrdost (jedná se o důlky hluboké cca 0,2mm).
