Un différentiel est un système mécanique qui a pour fonction de distribuer une vitesse de rotation par répartition de l'effort cinématique, de façon adaptative, immédiate et automatique, aux besoins d'un ensemble mécanique.

Par exemple, il est très utile sur un véhicule automobile où il permet aux roues motrices de tourner a des vitesses différentes lors du passage d'une courbe : les roues situées à l'extérieur tournent plus vite que celle situées à l'intérieur.

Sur ces deux images la motricité en provenance du moteur est représentée par la grande flèche rouge et s'exerce sur l'ensemble bleu :

  1. Sur l'image de gauche, les deux arbres de sortie (à gauche/rouge et à droite/jaune) tournent à la même vitesse. L'effort de rotation est donc réparti équitablement et le pignon intermédiaire vert (appelé satellite) ne tourne pas.
  2. Sur l'image de droite, l'arbre rouge est ralenti. Le pignon intermédiaire est alors entraîné et transfère une rotation supplémentaire à l'arbre jaune qui tourne alors à une vitesse supérieure.

Le système fonctionne de manière adaptative : lorsqu'on freine « légèrement » un des deux arbres (pincement, frottement…) la vitesse de rotation de cet arbre se trouve ralentie et la vitesse de l'autre augmente d'autant.

Ce procédé présente le désavantage de transférer le couple, c'est-à-dire l'effort en rotation, dans le même sens, dans la plupart des cas d'utilisation, il serait plutôt souhaitable d'appliquer un couple supérieur sur l'arbre opposant la plus grande résistance.

Sous sa forme la plus fréquente le différentiel est composé d'un pignon conique (solidaire de l'arbre moteur) entraînant perpendiculairement une couronne dentée conique supportant une cage de pignons satellites, ceux-ci entraînant deux pignons planétaires solidaires des arbres entraînés.

Le différentiel mécanique fut inventé en 1827 par le mécanicien français Onésiphore Pecqueur (1792-1852). Il fut employé dès 1860 sur les premiers véhicules routiers à vapeur.

Cas d'utilisation [modifier]

Le cas d'utilisation le plus répandu est l'entraînement d'un véhicule. Dans un virage, la roue située à l'intérieur (du côté où l'on tourne), ayant une distance plus faible à parcourir, tourne moins vite que la roue située à l'extérieur. Grâce au différentiel, la motricité est maintenue tout en autorisant la différence de vitesse entre les roues. Il assure ainsi une meilleure tenue de route (sans différentiel, un véhicule tend à aller tout droit) et permet de limiter l'usure des pneumatiques.

Il a aussi existé des véhicules sans différentiel, choix parfois dicté par l'économie de poids : la Lancia Lambda de 1921, la Voisin Laboratoire de 1923, l'Isetta de 1953. Dans ces deux derniers cas, le problème était résolu par une voie arrière très réduite. Le karting est un autre exemple de véhicule à quatre roues sans différentiel, mais comme les essieux sont très courts, le défaut induit en virage est moins important que sur les automobiles ordinaires. Une autre solution est de ne motoriser qu'une roue. Toutefois, le véhicule risque de dévier un peu, et cette solution n'est quasiment utilisée que pour les jouets.

Différentiel à glissement limité mécanique [modifier]

La faiblesse du différentiel ordinaire réside dans le fait que si une roue du train moteur n’adhère pas (par exemple roue sur la neige, dans la boue), l’ensemble de la transmission du couple se fait sur cette roue, et le véhicule n'avance plus correctement, voire plus du tout. Pour résoudre ce problème, certains différentiels sont conçus pour se limiter à partir d'un certain seuil de glissement (par exemple détectant un écart de couple entre les deux demi arbres fixés aux satellites), ce sont les différentiels à glissement limité (DGL en français ou LSD en anglais).

Différentiel Quaife

Les véhicules tout-terrain utilisent souvent ces dispositifs car ils sont prévus pour aller dans des terrains très meubles (boue, neige, etc.). Pour les véhicules puissants qui développent en général beaucoup de couple, il peut être nécessaire d'utiliser un (ou des) DGL. Dans ce cas, le véhicule peut modifier son comportement en virage, et au lieu de déraper, il conserve son adhérence mais peut modifier sensiblement la trajectoire prévisible. Il faut alors plus « piloter » que conduire !

Il existe plusieurs marques de différentiels à glissement limité (DGL) mécaniques. De nombreux brevets sont encore actifs, les solutions du marché comportent donc des différences notables. Parmi les modèles les plus courants, on peut citer les différentiels :

  • Torsen (Gleason Works fabricant américain de pigons et engrenages, a déposé la marque Torsen, pour « TORque SENsing », utilisant une vis sans fin, principe inventé au milieu du XXème siècle par l'ingénieur américain Vernon Gleasman),
  • Quaife (fabricant anglais, soit en OEM chez Ford notamment, soit en pièce de remplacement),
  • GKN Driveline (fabricant japonais de DGL et de visco coupleurs à glissement limité).

On dit souvent que le DGL est taré à xx %, pour signifier qu'il tolère un écart de couple de 100-xx % entre les demi arbres. Un DGL ne force pas les demi-arbres à être solidaires en cas de patinage d'une roue motrice, ce qui serait une opération mécaniquement très contraignante (risque de casse importante).

Autres systèmes complémentaires [modifier]

Il existe d'autres systèmes à glissement limité se plaçant en amont d'un différentiel. Un exemple remarquable est le célèbre système Quattro des Audi et Volkswagen à moteur transversal qui repose sur un embrayage sophistiqué :

  • le système Haldex Limited Slip Coupling de la société Haldex Traction AB, embrayage à disques multiples tournant dans un bain d'huile dont la pression est régulée électro-hydrauliquement par un système électronique.

Il permet de coupler partiellement ou totalement les essieux avant et arrière (en général il est monté juste en amont de l'essieu arrière). Cette architecture est extrêmement performante (certains vont jusqu'à dire trop) et permet de gérer l'adhérence des quatre roues en parfaite compatibilité avec les ABS, EPS et autres systèmes électroniques. La performance essentielle du système réside dans son temps de réaction extrèmement court (une roue ne patine qu'environ un dixième de tour avant la réaction de l'Haldex). Ce système est aussi capable de prendre en compte, en temps réel, des paramètres subtils comme le diamètre différent de chaque roue (chaque pneu n'est jamais exactement du même diamètre, une « galette » roue de secours peut être utilisée).

La critique principale portée contre les systèmes du type Haldex est la consommation de puissance plus importante que dans les systèmes mécaniques sans fluide. Toutefois, contrairement aux systèmes mécaniques qui sont toujours actifs (et dissipent de ce fait toujours de la puissance), il peut ne pas être actif en condition normale et préserver un rendement moyen supérieur aux DGL.

Tasauspyörästö on autoissa ja muissa pyörillä liikkuvien laitteiden voimansiirrossa käytettävä osa, jonka tehtävänä on antaa yhtä paljon vääntöä kummallekin vetävälle pyörälle, vaikka ne pyörisivätkin eri nopeudella. Tasauspyörästöä tarvitaan siksi, että laitteen samalla akselilla olevat pyörät pyörivät eri nopeutta kun laitteella kaarretaan. Tavanomaisen tasauspyörästön heikkoutena on se, että jos toinen pyörä on liukkaalla ja toinen pitävällä pinnalla, niin vain liukkaalla oleva pyörää pyörii, jolloin laite jää sutimaan paikalleen. Laitteissa, joissa tällainen ominaisuus häiritsee liikaa, kuten maastoautoissa, työkoneissa tai kilpa-autoissa, käytetään tasauspyörästön lukkoa.

Tasauspyörästö toimii siten, että molemmilla pyörillä on oma akselinsa, joiden sisemmät päät menevät pienten kartiopyörien kanssa hammaskosketuksessa olevien suurempien kartiopyörien sisään. Suoraan ajettaessa molemmat pyörät pyörivät samalla nopeudella, jolloin pienet kartiopyörät eivät pyöri akselillaan, vaan muodostavat ikään kuin kiinteän yhteyden akselien välille. Kaarrettaessa sisäkaarteen puoleisella pyörällä on lyhyempi matka kuljettavanaan kuin ulkokaarteen pyörällä, josta seuraa pyörimisnopeusero pyörien välille. Tällöin pienet kartiopyörät joutuvat pyörimään ja koska ne ovat hammaskosketuksessa kumpaisenkin akselin päissä olevien suurempien kartiopyörien kanssa, pyörittävät ne ulkokaarteen puolesta pyörää nopeammin.

Un diferencial es el elemento mecánico que permite que las ruedas derecha e izquierda giren a revoluciones diferentes, según el vehículo esté tomando una curva hacia un lado o hacia el otro.

Cuando un vehículo toma una curva, por ejemplo hacia la derecha, la rueda derecha recorre un camino más corto que la rueda izquierda, ya que esta última se encuentra en la parte exterior de la curva.

Antiguamente, las ruedas de los vehículos estaban montadas de forma fija sobre un eje. Este hecho significaba que una de las dos ruedas no giraba bien, de forma que se desestabilizaba el vehículo. Mediante el diferencial se consigue que cada rueda pueda girar correctamente en una curva, sin perder por ello la fijación de ambas sobre el eje, de manera que la tracción del motor actúa con la misma fuerza sobre cada una de las dos ruedas.

El diferencial consta de engranajes dispuestos en forma de "U" en el eje. Cuando ambas ruedas recorren el mismo camino, por ir el vehículo en línea recta, el engranaje se mantiene en situación neutra. Sin embargo, en una curva los engranajes se desplazan ligeramente, compensando con ello las diferentes velocidades de giro de las ruedas.

La diferencia de giro también se produce entre los dos ejes. Las ruedas directrices describen una circunferencia de radio mayor que las no directrices, por ello se utiliza el diferencial.

Un vehículo todoterreno puede tener hasta tres diferenciales: uno en el eje frontal, uno en el eje trasero y un diferencial central.

En el hipotético caso de que ambos ejes sean directrices, el que tenga mayor ángulo de giro describirá un radio mayor.

In an automobile and other wheeled vehicles, a differential is a device, usually consisting of gears, that allows each of the driving wheels to rotate at different speeds, while supplying equal torque to each of them. In automotive applications it is sometimes referred to as a "pumpkin".

A vehicle's wheels rotate at different speeds, especially when turning corners. The differential is designed to drive a pair of wheels with equal force, while allowing them to rotate at different speeds. In vehicles without a differential, such as karts, both driving wheels are forced to rotate at the same speed, usually on a common axle driven by a simple chain-drive mechanism. When cornering, the inner wheel travels a shorter distance than the outer wheel, resulting in the inner wheel spinning and/or the outer wheel dragging. This results in difficult and unpredictable handling, damage to tires and roads and strain on, and possible failure of the entire drive train.

There are many claims to the invention of the differential gear, but it is likely that it was known, at least in some places, in ancient times. Here are some of the milestones in the history of this device.

The following description of a differential applies to a "traditional" rear-wheel-drive car or truck: Power is supplied from the engine, via the gearbox, to a driveshaft (British term: propeller shaft), which runs to the rear axle. A pinion gear at the end of the propeller shaft is encased within the differential itself, and it engages with the large ring gear (British term: crownwheel), shown in the diagrams. The ring gear is attached to a carrier, which holds a set of small planetary gears. The three planetary gears are set up in such a way that the two outer gears (the side gears) can rotate in opposite directions relative to each other. The pair of side gears drive the axle shafts to each of the wheels. The entire carrier rotates in the same direction as the ring gear, but within that motion, the side gears can counter-rotate relative to each other.

Thus, for example, if the car is making a turn to the right, the main ring gear may make 10 full revolutions, and during that time, the left wheel will speed up because it has further to travel, and the right wheel will slow down correspondingly, as it has less distance to travel. The side gears will turn in opposite directions relative to each other by, say, 2 full turns each (4 full turns with regard to each other), resulting in the left wheel making 12 revolutions, and the right wheel making 8 revolutions.

When the vehicle is travelling in a straight line, there will be no movement of the planetary system of gears other than the minute movements necessary to compensate for slight differences in wheel diameter, undulations in the road (which make for a longer or shorter wheel path), etc.

One undesirable side effect of a differential is that it can reduce overall torque - the rotational force which propels the vehicle. The amount of torque required to propel the vehicle at any given moment depends on the load at that instant - how heavy the vehicle is, how much drag and friction there is, the gradient of the road, the vehicle's momentum and so on. For the purpose of this article, we will refer to this amount of torque as the "threshold torque".

The torque on each wheel is a result of the engine and transmission applying torsion, a twisting force, against the resistance of the traction at that wheel. Unless the load is exceptionally high, the engine and transmission can usually supply as much torque as necessary, so the limiting factor is usually the traction under each wheel. It is therefore convenient to define traction as the amount of torque that can be generated between the tire and the ground before the wheel starts to slip. If the total traction under all the driven wheels exceeds the threshold torque, the vehicle will be driven forward; if not, then one or more wheels will simply spin.

To illustrate how a differential can limit overall torque, imagine a simple rear-wheel-drive vehicle, with one rear wheel on asphalt with good grip, and the other on a patch of slippery ice. With the load, gradient, etc., the vehicle requires, say, 2000 Nm of torque to move forward (i.e. the threshold torque). Let us further assume that the non-spinning traction on the ice equates to 400 Nm, and the asphalt to 3000 Nm.

If the two wheels were driven without a differential, each wheel would push against the ground as hard as possible. The wheel on ice would quickly reach the limit of traction (400 Nm), but would be unable to spin because the other wheel has good traction. The traction of the asphalt plus the small extra traction from the ice exceeds the threshold requirement, so the vehicle will be propelled forward.

With a differential, however, as soon as the "ice wheel" reaches 400 Nm, it will start to spin, and then develop less traction~300Nm. The planetary gears inside the differential carrier will start to rotate because the "asphalt wheel" encounters greater resistance. Instead of driving the asphalt wheel with more force, the differential will allow the ice wheel to spin faster, and the asphalt wheel to remain stationary, compensating for extra speed of the spinning ice wheel. The torque on both wheels will be the same - limited to the lesser traction of 300 Nm each. Since 600 Nm is less than the required threshold of 2000 Nm, the vehicle will not be able to move.

Note that an observer will simply see one stationary wheel and one spinning wheel. It will not be obvious that both wheels are generating the same torque (i.e. both wheels are in fact pushing equally, despite the difference in rotational speed). This has led to a widely held misconception that a vehicle with a differential is really only "one-wheel-drive". In fact, a normal differential always provides equal torque to both driven wheels (unless it is a locking, torque-biasing, or limited slip type).

There are various devices for getting more traction from vehicles with differentials.

  • One solution is the limited slip differential (LSD), the most well-known of which is the clutch-type LSD. With this differential, the side gears are coupled to the carrier via a stack of clutch plates which limits the speed difference between the two wheels.
  • A locking differential employs a mechanism for allowing the planetary gears to be locked relative to each other, causing both wheels to turn at the same speed regardless of which has more traction; this is equivalent to removing the differential entirely.
  • The torsen differential keeps sending some torque to the wheel with more resistance
  • Electronic traction control systems usually use the ABS system to detect a spinning wheel and apply the brake to it. This progressively raises the reaction torque at that wheel, and the differential compensates by transmitting more torque through the other wheel - the one with better traction.
  • A viscous coupling unit replaces the differential entirely. It works on the principle of allowing the two output shafts to counter-rotate relative to each other within a viscous fluid. The fluid allows slow relative movements of the shafts, such as those caused by cornering, but will strongly resist high-speed movements, such as those caused by a single wheel spinning.

A four-wheel-drive vehicle will have at least two differentials (one for each pair of wheels) and possibly a center differential to apportion power between the front and rear axles. Vehicles without a center differential should not be driven on dry, paved roads in four wheel drive mode, as small differences in rotational speed between the front and rear wheels cause a torque to be applied across the transmission. This phenomenon is known as "wind-up" and can cause damage to the transmission. On loose surfaces these differences are absorbed by the slippage on the road surface.


The NP242 is an example of a transfer case that acts as a center differential allowing the drive shafts to spin at different speeds. This permits the four-wheel-drive vehicle to drive on paved surfaces without experiencing "wind-up".

A differential gear train can also be used to give the difference between two input axles. Mills often used such gears to apply torque in the required axis.

The oldest known example of a differential was once thought to be in the Antikythera mechanism. It was supposed to have used such a train to produce the difference between two inputs, one input related to the position of the sun on the zodiac, and the other input related to the position of the moon on the zodiac; the output of the differential gave a quantity related to the moon's phase. It has now been proven that the assumption of the existence of a differential gearing arrangement was incorrect.[1]

In the first half of the twentieth century, mechanical analog computers, called differential analyzers, were constructed that used differential gear trains to perform addition and subtraction.

[edit] Active differentials

A relatively new technology is the electronically-controlled active differential. A computer uses inputs from multiple sensors, including yaw rate, steering angle, and lateral acceleration and adjusts the distribution of torque to compensate for undesirable handling behaviors like understeer. Active differentials used to play a large role in the World Rally Championship, but in the 2006 season the FIA has limited the use of active differentials only to those drivers who have not competed in the World Rally Championship in the last five years.

Fully integrated active differentials are used on the Ferrari F430 and on the rear wheels in the Acura RL.

The second constraint of the differential is passive – it is actuated by the friction kinematics chain through the ground. The difference in torque on the tires (caused by turns or bumpy ground) drives the second degree of freedom, (overcoming the torque of inner friction) to equalise the driving torque on the tires. The sensitivity of the differential depends on the inner friction through the second degree of freedom. All of the differentials (so called “active” and “passive”) use clutches and brakes for restricting the second degree of freedom, so all suffer from the same disadvantage – decreased sensitivity to a dynamically changing environment. The sensitivity of the computer controlled differential is also limited by the time delay caused by sensors and the response time of the actuators.

Ein Differentialgetriebe bzw. Differenzialgetriebe, auch Ausgleichsgetriebe oder kurz Differential bzw. Differenzial genannt, ist ein spezielles Planetengetriebe mit einer Standübersetzung i0 = − 1. Bei einem Kraftfahrzeug, dem häufigsten Einsatzgebiet, ist es ein Getriebe zwischen den angetriebenen Rädern. Da die Räder einer Achse beim Fahren in einer Kurve unterschiedlich lange Wege zurücklegen und sich somit unterschiedlich schnell drehen, dürfen sie nicht starr miteinander verbunden werden.

Ein Differentialgetriebe besteht im Prinzip aus einem drehbaren Differentialkorb, der als Antrieb dient und an dessen Innenseite mehrere, üblicherweise zwei oder vier, Kegelräder drehbar befestigt sind. Diese Ausgleichsräder kämmen gleichzeitig mit zwei gleich großen Kegelrädern, die mit den Abtriebswellen verbunden sind. Bei Kraftfahrzeugen sind die Abtriebswellen mit den angetriebenen Rädern verbunden. Der Differentialkorb wird über ein Kegelradgetriebe, ein Stirnradgetriebe oder ein Hypoidgetriebe angetrieben.

In den nebenstehenden schematischen Abbildungen ist zur Vereinfachung nur ein Ausgleichsrad dargestellt. Der Differentialkorb wird über ein Stirnrad angetrieben. Bei Geradeausfahrt drehen sich beide Abtriebswellen und der Differentialkorb gleich schnell. Das Differentialgetriebe läuft als Block um, d.h. im Inneren stehen die Zahnräder relativ zueinander still. Erst wenn eine durch Kurvenfahrt oder Reibwertsunterschiede der Fahrbahn verursachte Differenzdrehzahl an den Abtriebswellen auftritt, drehen sich die Ausgleichsräder zusätzlich um ihre eigene Achse. Die Drehzahl des Differentialkorbs liegt zwischen den Drehzahlen der Abtriebswellen. An beiden Abtriebswellen greift immer die Hälfte des Antriebsdrehmomentes an. Wird im Extremfall eine Abtriebswelle angehalten, so dreht sich die andere doppelt so schnell wie vorher und damit auch doppelt so schnell wie der Differentialkorb (siehe zweite Abbildung). Dieser Fall tritt bei Kraftfahrzeugen bei losem oder glattem (Schnee) Untergrund auf, sofern sich ein Rad der angetriebenen Achse auf rutschigem und das andere Rad der Achse auf griffigem Untergrund befindet. Weil beide Räder durch das Differentialgetriebe gleich viel Drehmoment übertragen, wird die übertragbare Antriebskraft vom Rad mit der schlechteren Bodenhaftung limitiert. Technisch lässt sich mit Sperrdifferentialen Abhilfe schaffen, die in zahlreichen Bauformen existieren.

Neben der getriebetechnischen Lösung einer Differentialsperre erlaubt auch eine Antriebsschlupfregelung durch geeignetes Bremsen einzelner Räder eine Wirkung hervorzurufen, die dem Sperrdifferential ähnlich ist.

Varianten [Bearbeiten]

Wird das Differentialgetriebe an der Achse eines Kraftfahrzeugs verwendet, dann wird es als Achsdifferential bezeichnet und sorgt für den Ausgleich der Drehzahlen zwischen zwei Rädern. In diesem Falle ist die Standübersetzung stets i0 = − 1, d.h. wenn man den Differentialkorb "festhält" (z.B. durch Einlegen eines Ganges bei stillstehendem Motor), die Räder anhebt und am linken Rad dreht, dann dreht sich das rechte Rad mit der gleichen Drehzahl, aber in entgegengesetzter Richtung.

Zentraldifferential/Längsdifferential [Bearbeiten]

Bei Fahrzeugen, bei denen alle Räder angetrieben werden (Allradantrieb), ist ein Verteilergetriebe erforderlich, welches das Antriebsmoment auf die angetriebenen Achsen verteilt. Da sich bei Kurvenfahrt die Vorder- und Hinterachse verschieden schnell drehen, ist auch hier ein Drehzahlausgleich erforderlich; daher wird auch hier ein Differentialgetriebe eingesetzt, das als Zentral- oder Längsdifferential (wegen der längs liegenden Wellen) bezeichnet wird.

Zentraldifferentiale können wie Achsdifferentiale beschaffen sein, so dass sie ebenfalls eine Standübersetzung von i0 = − 1 haben, man spricht dann von einer Momentenaufteilung von 50:50 zwischen den Achsen. Je näher ein Differential in gewöhnlicher Bauart diesem Verhältnis kommt, um so weniger Reibung entsteht auch unter Differenzdrehzahl und um so geringer sind die Verluste bei der Umverteilung von Drehzahlen.

Es ist aber auch möglich, Zentraldifferentiale mit anderen Standübersetzungen zu bauen, dann kann beispielsweise die Hinterachse mehr Antriebsmoment auf die Straße bringen als die Vorderachse, was beim Beschleunigen und in Steigungen ein großer Vorteil ist. Eine mögliche Verteilung wäre z.B. 35:65, d. h. 35 % des Antriebsmomentes werden an die Vorderachse weitergeleitet und 65 % an die Hinterachse. In diesem Falle ist die Bezeichnung Differential zwar üblich, aber nicht ganz korrekt.

Zentraldifferentiale werden gelegentlich als Stufenplanetensatz (hintereinander geschaltete Planetensätze) gebaut, falls sie aus baulichen Gründen nicht über den Steg angetrieben werden können.

Beschreibung als Planetengetriebe [Bearbeiten]

Da die Standübersetzung beim Differential festliegt, kann man die Drehzahlen aus den Grundgleichungen für Planetengetriebe herleiten:

n_l + n_r = 2 \cdot n_{An}

Das bedeutet, dass in jedem Betriebszustand die Summe der Drehzahlen der Räder (Index l, r) gleich der doppelten Drehzahl des Differentialgehäuses (Index An) ist oder dass die Drehzahl des Gehäuses der arithmetische Mittelwert der Raddrehzahlen ist. Dabei sind für die Drehzahlen Vorzeichen zu wählen, wenn also ein Rad rückwärts dreht, ist es hier negativ einzusetzen.

Die Drehmomente verteilen sich im reibungsfreien Differential im Verhältnis 50:50 auf die Räder. Im normalen Differential wirkt immer ein wenig Reibung, so dass es sich wie ein schwach drehmomentfühlendes Sperrdifferential verhält.

Geschichte [Bearbeiten]

Das Differential wurde spätestens ca. 100 v.Chr. in Griechenland erfunden, wo es in einem mechanischen Planetarium verwendet wurde (siehe Mechanismus von Antikythera), geriet jedoch in Vergessenheit und wurde später von Leonardo da Vinci neu erfunden. Das heute übliche Differentialgetriebe für Fahrzeuge wurde im Jahr 1827 von dem Franzosen Onésiphore Pecqueur erfunden.
