Svarv är en maskin för spånavverkande bearbetning av rotationssymmetriska föremål där man låter arbetsstycket rotera medan verktyget hålls stilla. Arbetstycket spänns vanligtvis upp mellan två dockor som består av anordningar där i varje fall den ena har fasthållande och drivande funktion och den andra stödjande funktion. I vissa sammanhang, exempelvis vid svarvning av träskålar eller träknoppar, används endast den drivande funktionen (svarvning på fri ände).

Svarvar finns för olika ändamål och för olika material, från mycket små urmakarsvarvar till mycket stora för verkstadsindustrin, för trä och metall. Svarvar tillverkas med olika grad av automatisering, från enkla träsvarvar där verktyget hålls och styrs med handen, över metallsvarvar där verktyget hålls fast av en verktygshållare som styrs manuellt till helautomatiskt numeriskt styrda svarvar så kallade CNC-svarvar.

立方晶窒化ホウ素 （りっぽうしょうちっかほうそ、cBN）は、窒化ホウ素の分子構造の一つで、窒素とホウ素からなる固形の化合物である。CBN の表記は、しばしば、その粒子を固めた「多結晶CBN」(PCBN) の意味で用いられる。

立方晶窒化ホウ素は、ダイヤモンドの静的高温高圧法に似た方法で合成される。

ダイヤモンドに次ぐ硬さを持つ物質で、またダイヤモンドに比べて熱に強く鉄との反応性が低いという性質を持つため、その粒子を超高圧下で焼結したものは、硬質材料の切削に留まらず鋼や鋳鉄の超高速切削といった分野でも用いられる。

この結晶の硬さはその構造に由来する。 窒素原子(N)は共有結合をする際に孤立電子対が1対余り、ホウ素原子(B)は共有結合の際に電子対が1対足りない。 このためNとBの間には配位結合が形成され、この結合は共有結合と同等である。 するとNもBも共有結合（と同等な結合）を4本ずつ持つことになり、炭素と同じくダイヤモンド構造をとることができるのである。 この構造をとったものがまさにCBNである。

アメリカのゼネラル・エレクトリック社 (General Electric 、GE) が1969年にボラゾン (Borazon®)の商品名で発売した。

Borazon, a boron nitride allotrope, is the fourth hardest substance, after aggregated diamond nanorods, ultrahard fullerite, and diamond, and the third hardest artificial material. Borazon is a crystal created by heating equal quantities of boron and nitrogen at temperatures greater than 1800 °C (3300 °F) at 7 GPa (1 million lbf/in²). Borazon is the only substance other than those listed above that can scratch a diamond [1] (although lasers can cut diamond). A diamond will also scratch Borazon.

Borazon was first produced in 1957 by Robert H. Wentorf, Jr., a physical chemist for the General Electric Company. In 1969, General Electric adopted the name Borazon as its trademark for the crystal.

Borazon is used in industrial applications to shape tools, as it can withstand temperatures greater than 2000 °C (3500 °F), much higher than that of a pure diamond at 871 °C (1600 °F). Other uses include jewellery designing, glass cutting and laceration of diamonds.

Il borazone è un cristallo sintetico, allotropo del nitruro di boro; è il terzo materiale prodotto artificialmente per durezza, preceduto solo dai nanotubi di diamante aggregati e dai diamanti sintetici. Il borazone è l'unico materiale in grado di incidere il diamante (oltre al diamante stesso); il diamante può incidere il borazone.

Il borazone è stato prodotto per la prima volta nel 1957 da Robert H. Wentorf, Jr., un chimico fisico, per la General Electric Company. Nel 1969, General Electric ha adottato il nome Borazon come marchio registrato per il cristallo.

Borazons, bora nitrīda alotrops, ir trešā cietākā mākslīgi radītā viela pēc dimanta nanostienīšiem un ultracietā fullerīta. Borazons ir kristāls, kuru rada, karsējot līdzīgu daudzumu bora un slāpekļa temperatūrā, kas pārsniedz 1800 °C pie 7 GPa spiediena. サーメット (cermet ) は、金属の炭化物や窒化物など硬質化合物の粉末を金属を結合材として焼結した複合材料で、定義上は超硬合金と呼ばれる炭化タングステン(WC)を主成分としたものも含まれるが、これを別のものとして扱うことが多い。名称はceramics( セラミックス )とmetal( 金属 )からの造語である。これは、1959年にセラミックスよりはねばさの点が少し大きい工具材料として開発された。

全般的に、サーメットは耐熱性や耐摩耗性が高いが、その反面、脆く欠け易い。主に切削工具の材料として使われるほか、化学プラントの機械の部品や、高温用のノズルなどにも用いられている。

サーメットの組成(wt%) の1例としては、TiC-20TiN-15WC-10Mo₂C-5Ni が挙げられる。

[編集] 切削工具材質としてのサーメット

切削工具材質には、主に炭化チタン(TiC)や炭窒化チタン(TiCN)などのチタン化合物をニッケル(Ni)やコバルト(Co)で結合したものが多く用いられる。こうしたチタン系のサーメットは、超硬合金と比べて鉄との親和性が低く、鋼の仕上げ切削に於いてとくに有効とされる。 この他に硬質化合物としては炭化ニオブ(NbC)なども用いられる。

Cermet er en forkortelse for "keramik" og "metal". Et CerMet er et kompositmateriale, der består af keramik (cer) og metalliske (met) materialer. Et cermet er ideelt designet til at have de optimale egenskaber fra både keramik, såsom høj temperatur resistens og hårdhed - og de bedste egenskaber fra metaller, såsom at kunne virke plastisk deformerbare.

Metallet bliver anvendt som en binder for et oxid, borid, karbid eller aluminid. Generelt er de anvendte metaller nikkel, molybdæn og kobolt. Afhængig af materialets fysiske struktur, kan cermet også være metal matrix composite, men cermet indeholder efter rumfang typisk mindre end 20% metal.

Cermet bliver typisk anvendt i modstande (specielt i variable modstande), kondensatorer, og andre elektroniske komponenter, som kan blive udsat for høje temperaturer.
