應該不下於某些專利流氓的作為吧!

首先是一個能夠在您的手持裝置
( 手機、GPS 導航儀、能上網的行動裝置等 ) 離開基地台、
WiFi 熱點太遠,甚至是脫離 GPS 衛星搜索範圍時,

這東西,事實上應該也已經有不少人在玩了吧!

Das Wirbelrohr, auch bekannt als Ranque-Hilsch Wirbelrohr, ist eine Vorrichtung ohne bewegliche Teile, mit der sich Gas in einen heißen und einen kalten Strom aufteilen lässt. Unter Druck stehendes Gas wird tangential in eine Wirbelkammer eingeblasen und in eine schnelle Rotation versetzt (über 1.000.000 U/min). Der Gasstrom teilt sich aufgrund der hohen Fliehkräfte und weiteren noch nicht vollständig verstandenen Prozessen in einen äußeren warmen und einen inneren kalten Strom auf. Dabei entsteht ein charakteristisches, lautstarkes Pfeifen, das offenbar zur Trennung der Gasströme notwendig ist.

Das Wirbelrohr wurde 1933 von dem französischen Physiker Georges J. Ranque erfunden. Der deutsche Physiker Rudolf Hilsch verbesserte die Konstruktion und publizierte eine stark beachtete Veröffentlichung (siehe Quellen).

Wirbelrohre haben einen im Vergleich zu herkömmlichen Kühlverfahren sehr niedrigen Wirkungsgrad, werden jedoch für preiswerte Punktkühlung verwendet, wenn Druckluft verfügbar ist. Kommerzielle Modelle für industrielle Anwendungen können ein Temperaturgefälle von etwa 45 °C erzeugen.

Mit inkompressiblen Medien wie Flüssigkeiten funktioniert das Wirbelrohr nur stark eingeschränkt.

Separation of a compressed gas in a hot and cold stream

The vortex tube, also known as the Ranque-Hilsch vortex tube, is a mechanical device that separates a compressed gas into hot and cold streams. It has no moving parts.

Pressurized gas is injected tangentially into a swirl chamber and accelerates to a high rate of rotation. Due to the conical nozzle at the end of the tube, only the outer shell of the compressed gas is allowed to escape at that end. The remainder of the gas is forced to return in an inner vortex of reduced diameter within the outer vortex.

There are different explanations for the effect and there is debate on which explanation is best or correct.

What is usually agreed upon is that the air in the tube experiences mostly "solid body rotation", which simply means the rotation rate (angular velocity) of the inner gas is the same as that of the outer gas. This is different from what most consider standard vortex behaviour--where inner fluid spins at a higher rate than outer fluid. The (mostly) solid body rotation is probably due to the long time which each parcel of air remains in the vortex--allowing friction between the inner parcels and outer parcels to have a notable effect.

It is also usually agreed upon that there is a slight effect of hot air wanting to "rise" toward the center, but this effect is negligible--especially if turbulence is kept to a minimum.

One simple explanation is that the outer air is under higher pressure than the inner air (because of centrifugal force). Therefore the temperature of the outer air is higher than that of the inner air.

Another explanation is that as both vortices rotate at the same angular velocity and direction, the inner vortex has lost angular momentum. The decrease of angular momentum is transferred as kinetic energy to the outer vortex, resulting in separated flows of hot and cold gas.[1]

This is somewhat analogous to a Peltier effect device, which uses electrical pressure (voltage) to move heat to one side of a dissimilar metal junction, causing the other side to grow cold.

When used to refrigerate, heat-sinking the whole vortex tube is helpful. Vortex tubes can also be cascaded. The cold (or hot) output of one can be used to pre-cool (or pre-heat) the air supply to another vortex tube. Cascaded tubes can be used, for example, to produce cryogenic temperatures.

The vortex tube was invented in 1933 by French physicist Georges J. Ranque. German physicist Rudolf Hilsch improved the design and published a widely read paper in 1947 on the device, which he called a Wirbelrohr (literally, whirl pipe).[2] Vortex tubes also seem to work with liquids to some extent.[3]

Vortex tubes have lower efficiency than traditional air conditioning equipment. They are commonly used for inexpensive spot cooling, when compressed air is available. Commercial models are designed for industrial applications to produce a temperature drop of about 45 °C (80 °F).

  • Dave Williams, of Engineers Without Borders, has proposed using vortex tubes to make ice in third-world countries. Although the technique is inefficient, Williams expressed hope that vortex tubes could yield helpful results in areas where using electricity to create ice is not an option.
  • There are industrial applications that result in unused pressurized gases. Using vortex tube energy separation may be a method to recover waste pressure energy from high and low pressure sources.[4]

Cutting fluids are various fluids that are used in machining to cool and lubricate the cutting tool. There are various kinds of cutting fluids, which include oils, oil-water emulsions, pastes, gels, and mists. They may be made from petroleum distillates, animal fats, plant oils, or other raw ingredients. Depending on context and on which type of cutting fluid is being considered, it may be referred to as cutting fluid, cutting oil, cutting compound, coolant, or lubricant.

Every kind of machining (e.g., turning, boring, drilling, milling, broaching, grinding, sawing, shaping, planing, reaming, tapping) can potentially benefit from one kind of cutting fluid or another, depending on workpiece material. (Cast iron and brass are usually machined dry. Interrupted cuts such as milling with carbide cutters are usually recommended to be used dry due to damage to the cutters caused by thermoshock.)

The properties that are sought after in a good cutting fluid are the ability to:

  • keep the workpiece at a stable temperature (critical when working to close tolerances). Very warm is OK, but extremely hot or alternately hot-and-cold are avoided.
  • maximize the life of the cutting tip by lubricating the working edge and reducing tip welding.
  • ensure safety for the people handling it (toxicity, bacteria, fungi) and for the environment upon disposal.
  • prevent rust on machine parts and cutters.


[edit] Mechanisms of action

[edit] Cooling

Metalcutting operations involve generation of heat due to friction between the tool and the pieces and due to energy lost deforming the material. The surrounding air alone is a rather poor coolant for the cutting tool, because the rate of heat transfer is low. Ambient-air cooling is adequate for light cuts with periods of rest in between, such as are typical in maintenance, repair and operations (MRO) work or hobbyist contexts. However, for heavy cuts and constant use, such as in production work, more heat is produced per time period than ambient-air cooling can remove. It is not acceptable to introduce long idle periods into the cycle time to allow the air-cooling of the tool to "catch up" when the heat-removal can instead be accomplished with a flood of liquid, which can "keep up" with the heat generation.

[edit] Lubrication at the tool-chip interface

Besides cooling, the other way that cutting fluids aid the cutting process is by lubricating the interface between the tool's cutting edge and the chip. By preventing friction at this interface, some of the heat generation is prevented. This lubrication also helps prevent the chip from being welded onto the tool, which interferes with subsequent cutting.

EP additives are often added to cutting fluids.

[edit] Delivery methods

Every conceivable method of applying cutting fluid (flooding, spraying, dripping, misting, etc.) can be used, with the best choice depending on the application and the equipment available. For many metalcutting applications the ideal would be high-pressure, high-volume pumping to force a stream of fluid directly into the tool-chip interface, with walls around the machine to contain the splatter and a sump to catch, filter, and recirculate the fluid. This type of system is commonly employed, especially in manufacturing. It is often not a practical option for MRO or hobbyist metalcutting, where smaller, simpler machine tools are used. Fortunately it is also not necessary in those applications, where heavy cuts, aggressive speeds and feeds, and constant, all-day cutting are not vital.

There are generally 3 types of liquids: mineral, semi-synthetic and synthetic.

Water is a great conductor of heat but has drawbacks as a cutting fluid. It boils easily, promotes rusting of machine parts, and does not lubricate well. Therefore, other ingredients are necessary to create an optimal cutting fluid.

Mineral coolants, which are petroleum-based, began in the late 1800s. They vary from the thick, dark, sulfur-rich cutting oils used in heavy industry to light, clear oils.

Semi-synthetic coolants are an emulsion or microemulsion of water with mineral oil. They began in the 1930s. A typical CNC usually uses emulsified coolant. One way to understand it is to think of "pots-and-pans dishwater". It is a fair amount of oil emulsified into a larger amount of water using a detergent. Therefore it is roughly analogous to your dishwater after you have washed the vegetable oil off your pans (although more oily and less soapy).

Synthetic coolants originated in the late 1950s and are usually water-based.

A hand-held refractometer is used to determine the mix ratio (also called strength) of water soluble coolants to verify effectiveness. Numerous other test equipment are used to determine such things as acidity, and amount of conductivity.

Cutting fluid may also take the form of a paste or gel when used for some applications, in particular hand operations such as drilling and tapping.

  • Kerosene, rubbing alcohol, and 3-In-One Oil often give good results when working on aluminium.
  • Lard is suitable for general machining and also press tool work.

  • Dielectric fluid is the cutting fluid used in Electrical discharge machines (EDMs). It is usually deionized water or a high-flash-point kerosene. Intense heat is generated by the cutting action of the electrode (or wire) and the fluid is used to stabilise the temperature of the workpiece, along with flushing any eroded particles from the immediate work area. The dielectric fluid is nonconductive.
  • Liquid- (water- or petroleum oil-) cooled water tables are used with the plasma arc cutting (PAC) process.

  • In 19th-century machining practice, it was not uncommon to use plain water. This was simply a practical expedient to keep the cutter cool, regardless of whether it provided any lubrication at the cutting edge–chip interface. When one considers that high-speed steel (HSS) had not been developed yet, the need to cool the tool becomes all the more apparent. (HSS retains its hardness at high temperatures; other carbon tool steels do not.) An improvement was soda water, which better inhibited the rusting of machine slides. These options are generally not used today because better options are available.
  • Lard was very popular in the past. It is used less often today, because of the wide variety of other options, but it is still a fine option.
  • Old machine shop training texts speak of using red lead and white lead, often mixed into lard or lard oil. This practice is obsolete. Lead is a health hazard, and excellent non-lead-containing options are available.
  • From the mid-20th century to the 1990s, 1,1,1-trichloroethane was used as an additive to make some cutting fluids more effective. In shop-floor slang it was referred to as "one-one-one". It has been phased out because of its ozone-depleting and CNS-depressing properties.

[edit] Safety concerns (toxicity, bacteria, fungi)

Cutting fluids have been associated with skin rashes, dermatitis, esophagitis, lung disease, and cancer. These problems result from either toxicity or bacterial or fungal contamination.

Safer formulations provide a natural resistance to tramp oils allowing improved filtration separation without removing the base additive package.

Bacterial growth is predominant in semi-synthetic and synthetic fluids. Tramp oil along with human hair or skin oil are some of the debris during cutting which accumulates and forms a layer on the top of the liquid, anaerobic bacteria proliferate due to a number of factors. An early sign of the need for replacement is the "Monday-morning smell" (due to lack of usage from Friday to Monday). Antiseptics are sometimes added to the fluid to kill bacteria. Such use must be balanced against whether the antiseptics will harm the cutting performance, workers' health, or the environment.

[edit] Environmental impact

Old, used cutting fluid must be disposed of when it is fetid or when it is chemically degraded and has lost its performance. As with used motor oil or other wastes, its impact on the environment should be mitigated. Legislation and regulation specify how this mitigation should be achieved. Enforcement is the most challenging aspect. Modern cutting fluid disposal may involve techniques such as ultrafiltration using polymeric or ceramic membranes which concentrates the suspended and emulsified oil phase.

The phrase speeds and feeds refers to two separate velocities in machine tool practice, cutting speed and feed rate. They are often considered as a pair because of their combined effect on the cutting process. Each, however, can also be considered and analyzed in its own right (as done in subsequent sections below). Cutting speed is the speed difference between the cutting tool and the surface of the workpiece it is operating on. (As discussed later, it is related to, but not the same as, spindle speed.) It is expressed in units of distance along the workpiece surface per time (typically surface feet per minute [sfm]). Feed rate is the velocity at which the cutter is fed, that is, advanced against the workpiece. It is expressed in units of distance per revolution for turning and boring (typically inches per revolution [ipr] or millimeters per revolution). It can be expressed thus for milling also, but it is often expressed in units of distance per time for milling (typically inches per minute [ipm] or millimeters per minute). Cutting speed and feed rate together determine the material removal rate, which is the volume of workpiece material (metal, wood, plastic, etc.) that can be removed per time unit.

If variables such as cutter geometry and the rigidity of the machine tool and its tooling setup could be ideally maximized (and reduced to negligible constants), then the amount of power (that is, kilowatts or horsepower) available to the spindle would determine the maximum speeds and feeds possible for any given workpiece material and cutter material. Of course, in reality those other variables are dynamic and not negligible; but there is still a correlation between power available and feeds and speeds employed.

[edit] Cutting speed

Cutting speed may be defined as the rate (or speed) that the material moves past the cutting edge of the tool , irrespective of the machining operation used — the surface speed. A cutting speed for mild steel, of 100 ft/min (or approx 30 meters/min) is the same whether it is the speed of the (stationary) cutter passing over the (moving) workpiece, such as in a turning operation, or the speed of the (stationary) workpiece moving past a (rotating) cutter, such as in a milling operation. What will affect the value of this surface speed for mild steel, is the cutting conditions:

For a given material there will be an optimum cutting speed for a certain set of machining conditions, and from this speed the spindle speed (RPM) can be calculated. Factors affecting the calculation of cutting speed are:

  • The material being machined (steel, brass, tool steel, plastic, wood) (see table below)
  • The material the cutter is made from (Carbon steel, High speed steel (HSS), carbide, ceramics)
  • The economical life of the cutter (the cost to regrind or purchase new, compared to the quantity of parts produced).

Cutting speeds are calculated on the assumption that optimum cutting conditions exist, these include:

  • Metal removal rate (finishing cuts that remove a small amount of material may be run at increased speeds)
  • Full and constant flow of cutting fluid (adequate cooling and chip flushing)
  • Rigidity of the machine and tooling setup (reduction in vibration or chatter)
  • Continuity of cut (as compared to an interrupted cut, such as machining square section material in a lathe)
  • Condition of material (mill scale, hard spots due to white cast iron forming in castings)

The cutting Speed is given as a set of constants that are available from the material manufacturer or supplier, the most common materials are available in reference books, or charts but will always be subject to adjustment depending on the cutting conditions. The following table gives the cutting speeds for a selection of common materials under one set of conditions. The conditions are a tool life of 1 hour, dry cutting (no coolant) and at medium feeds so they may appear to be incorrect depending on circumstances. These cutting speeds may change if, for instance, adequate coolant is available or an improved grade of HSS is used (such as one that includes cobalt).

[edit] Spindle speed

The spindle speed is the rotational frequency of the spindle of the machine, measured in revolutions per minute (RPM). The preferred speed is determined based on the material being cut.

The spindle may hold the:

Excessive spindle speed will cause premature tool wear, breakages, and can cause tool chatter, all of which can lead to potentially dangerous conditions. Using the correct spindle speed for the material and tools will greatly affect tool life and the quality of the surface finish.

For a given machining operation, the cutting speed will remain constant for most situations; therefore the spindle speed will also remain constant. Facing operations on a lathe however involve the machining of a constantly changing diameter. Ideally this means changing the spindle speed as the cut advances across the face of the workpiece, this was harder to do in practice and was often ignored unless the work demanded it. The introduction of CNC controlled lathes has solved this awkward problem as variable speed electric motors are a practical solution to the problem.

Grinding wheels are designed to be run at a maximum safe speed, the spindle speed of the grinding machine may be variable but this should only be changed with due attention to the safe working speed of the wheel. As a wheel wears it will decrease in diameter, and its effective cutting speed will be reduced. Some grinders have the provision to increase the spindle speed which corrects for this loss of cutting ability, however increasing the speed beyond the wheels rating will destroy the wheel and create a serious hazard to life and limb.

Generally speaking, spindle speeds and feed rates are less critical in woodworking than metalworking. Most woodworking machines including power saws such as circular saws and band saws, jointers, Thickness planers rotate at a fixed RPM. In those machines, cutting speed is regulated through the feed rate. The required feed rate can be extremely variable depending on the power of the motor, the hardness of the wood or other material being machined, and the sharpness of the cutting tool.

In woodworking, the ideal feed rate is one that is slow enough not to bog down the motor, yet fast enough to avoid burning the material. Certain woods, such as black cherry and maple are more prone to burning than others. The right feed rate is usually obtained by "feel" if the material is hand fed, or by trial and error if a power feeder is used. In thicknessers or planers, the wood is usually fed automatically through rubber or corrugated steel rollers. Some of these machines allow varying the feed rate, usually by changing pulleys. A slower feed rate usually results in a finer surface as more cuts are made for any length of wood.

Spindle speed becomes important in the operation of routers, spindle moulders or shapers, and drills. Older and smaller routers often rotate at a fixed spindle speed, usually between 20,000 and 25,000 RPM. While these speeds are fine for small router bits, using larger bits, say more than 1 inch or 25 millimeters in diameter, can be dangerous and can lead to chatter. Larger routers now have variable speeds and larger bits require slower speed. Drilling wood generally uses higher spindle speeds than metal, and the speed is not as critical. However, larger diameter drill bits do require slower speeds to avoid burning.

Cutting feeds and speeds, and the spindle speeds that are derived from them, are the ideal cutting conditions for a tool. If the conditions are less than ideal then adjustments are made to the spindle's speed, this adjustment is usually a reduction in RPM to the closest available speed, or one that is deemed (through knowledge and experience) to be correct.

Some materials, such as machinable wax, can be cut at a wide variety of spindle speeds, while others, such as stainless steel require much more careful control as the cutting speed is critical, to avoid overheating both the cutter and workpiece. Stainless steel is one material that work hardens very easily, therefore insufficient feed rate or incorrect spindle speed can lead to less than ideal cutting conditions as the work piece will quickly harden and resist the tool's cutting action. The liberal application of cutting fluid can improve these cutting conditions however the correct selection of speeds is the critical factor.

Most metalworking books have nomograms or tables of spindle speeds and feed rates for different cutters and workpiece materials; similar tables are also likely available from the manufacturer of the cutter used.

The spindle speeds may be calculated for all machining operations once the cutting speed is known. As noted above, the cutting speed is the surface speed of the material as it passes the cutter, in most cases we are dealing with a cylindrical object such as a milling cutter or a workpiece turning in a lathe so we need to determine the speed at the periphery of this round object. This speed at the periphery (of a point on the circumference, moving past a stationary point) will depend on the rotational speed (RPM) and diameter of the object.

An anology would be a skateboard rider and a bicycle rider travelling side by side along the road. For a given surface speed (the speed of this pair along the road) the rotational speed (RPM) of their wheels (large for the skater and small for the bicycle rider) will be different. This rotational speed (RPM) is what we are calculating, given a fixed surface speed (speed along the road) and known values for their wheel sizes (cutter or workpiece).

The following formulae[1] may be used to estimate this value.

This formula uses a constant, so that the arithmetic can be quickly and simply performed:

RPM = {k \times Speed \over Diameter}

eg: for a cutting speed of 100 ft/min (a plain HSS steel cutter on mild steel) and diameter of 10 inches (the cutter or the work piece, it doesn't matter)

RPM = {k \times Speed \over Diameter} = {4 \times 100 ft/min \over 10 inches} = {40 revs/min}

and using the same example as above

RPM = {Speed \over Circumference} = {Speed \over \pi \times Diameter} = {100 ft/min \over \pi \times 10 inches \left ( \frac{1 ft}{12 inches} \right )} = {100 \over 2.62} = 38.2 revs/min

  • RPM is the rotational speed of the cutter or workpiece.
  • k is a constant, (320 for metric units, 4 for imperial unit units)
  • Speed is the recommended cutting speed of the material (depending on k) in meters/minute or feet/min
  • Diameter (again, depending on k) in millimeters or inches
  • π is the constant pi (3.14)
  • Circumference of the workpiece measured in meters or feet
  • \begin{matrix} \left ( \frac{1}{12} \right )\end{matrix} conversion of inches to feet

Feed rate is the velocity at which the cutter is fed, that is, advanced against the workpiece. It is expressed in units of distance per revolution for turning and boring (typically inches per revolution [ipr] or millimeters per revolution). It can be expressed thus for milling also, but it is often expressed in units of distance per time for milling (typically inches per minute [ipm] or millimeters per minute), with considerations of how many teeth (or flutes) the cutter has then determining what that means for each tooth.

Feedrate is dependent on the:

  • Surface finish desired.
  • Power available at the spindle (to prevent stalling of the cutter or workpiece).
  • Rigidity of the machine and tooling setup (ability to withstand vibration or chatter).
  • Strength of the workpiece (high feed rates will collapse thin wall tubing)
  • Characteristics of the material being cut, chip flow depends on material type and feed rate. The ideal chip shape is small and breaks free early, carrying heat away from the tool and work.

When deciding what feed rate to use for a certain cutting operation, the calculation is fairly straightforward for single-point cutting tools, because all of the cutting work is done at one point (done by "one tooth", as it were). With a milling machine or jointer, where multi-tipped/multi-fluted cutting tools are involved, then the desirable feed rate becomes dependent on the number of teeth on the cutter. The greater the number of cutting edges, the higher the feed rate permissible: for a cutting edge to work efficiently it must remove sufficient material to cut rather than rub; it also must do its fair share of work.

The ratio of the spindle speed and the feed rate controls how aggressive the cut is, and the nature of the swarf formed.

In machining, boring is the process of enlarging a hole that has already been drilled (or cast), by means of a single-point cutting tool (or of a boring head containing several such tools), for example as in boring a cannon barrel. Boring is used to achieve greater accuracy of the diameter of a hole, and can be used to cut a tapered hole.

The term boring is also sometimes used for drilling a hole, especially with respect to tunnels and wells in the earth.

The boring process can be carried out on a lathe for smaller operations, but for larger production pieces a special boring mill (work piece rotation around a vertical axis) or a horizontal boring machine (rotation around horizontal axis) are used. The dimensions between the piece and the tool bit can be changed about two axes to cut both along and into the internal surface. A tapered hole can also be made by swiveling the head.

The boring machines (similar to the milling machines such as the classic Van Norman) come in a large variety of sizes and styles. Work piece diameters are commonly 1-4m (3-12 ft) but can be as large as 20m (60ft). Power requirements can be as much as 200 hp. The control systems can be computer-based, allowing for automation and increased consistency.

Because boring is meant to decrease the product tolerances on pre-existing holes, several design considerations must be made. First, large length-to-bore-diameters are not preferred due to cutting tool deflection. Next, through holes are preferred over blind holes (holes that do not traverse the thickness of the work piece). Interrupted internal working surfaces—where the cutting tool and surface have discontinuous contact—should be avoided. The boring bar is the protruding arm of the machine that holds cutting tool(s), and must be very rigid.1

Boring is used for a wide variety of applications in geology, agriculture, hydrology, civil engineering, and oil and natural gas industries. Today, most earth drilling is done in order to do one of the following things:

  • return samples of the rock through which the drill passes
  • access rocks from which material can be extracted
  • access rocks which can then be measured
  • provide access to rock for purposes of providing engineering support

In the 1970's and early 1980's the USSR attempted to drill a hole through the crust, to sample the Mohorovicic Discontinuity. The deepest hole ever drilled failed not because of lack of money or time, but because of the physics of rocks within the crust. The hole achieved approximately 12,000 metres depth, a depth at which rock begins to act more like a plastic solid than a rigid solid. The rock also approached temperatures of several hundred degrees Celsius, requiring that the drilling fluid was refrigerated before being sent to the cutting face of the drill. As the drill bits burnt out and were removed for replacement, the hole simply flowed closed, and the rock had to be re-drilled. Due to the temperature, the drill bits burnt out before achieving any headway. The hole was scrapped.

Further attempts at super-deep drillholes are planned by American consortia and further Russian attempts in Finland.

A grinding machine is a machine tool used for producing very fine finishes or making very light cuts, using an abrasive wheel as the cutting device. This wheel can be made up of various sizes and types of stones, diamonds or of inorganic materials.

The grinding machine consists of a power driven grinding wheel spinning at the required speed (which is determined by the wheel’s diameter and manufacturer’s rating, usually by a formula) and a bed with a fixture to guide and hold the work-piece. The grinding head can be controlled to travel across a fixed work piece or the workpiece can be moved whilst the grind head stays in a fixed position. Very fine control of the grinding head or tables position is possible using a vernier calibrated hand wheel, or using the features of NC or CNC controls.


Grinding machines remove material from the workpiece by abrasion, which can generate substantial amounts of heat; they therefore incorporate a coolant to cool the workpiece so that it does not overheat and go outside its tolerance. The coolant also benefits the machinist as the heat generated may cause burns in some cases. In very high-precision grinding machines (most cylindrical and surface grinders) the final grinding stages are usually set up so that they remove about 2/10000mm (less than 1/100000 in) per pass - this generates so little heat that even with no coolant, the temperature rise is negligible.

These machines include the

  • Belt grinder, which is usually used as a machining method to process metals and other materials, with the aid of coated abrasives. Sanding is the machining of wood; grinding is the common name for machining metals. Belt grinding is a versatile process suitable for all kind of applications like finishing, deburring, and stock removal
  • Bench grinder, which usually has two wheels of different grain sizes for roughing and finishing operations and is secured to a workbench. It is used for shaping tool bits or various tools that need to be made or repaired. Bench grinders are manually operated.
  • Cylindrical grinder which includes the centerless grinder. A cylindrical grinder may have multiple grinding wheels. The workpiece is rotated and fed past the wheel/s to form a cylinder. It is used to make precision rods.
  • Surface grinder which includes the wash grinder. A surface grinder has a "head" which is lowered, and the workpiece is moved back and forth past the grinding wheel on a table that has a permanent magnet for use with magnetic stock. Surface grinders can be manually operated or have CNC controls.
  • Tool and Cutter grinder and the D-bit grinder. These usually can perform the minor function of the drill bit grinder, or other specialist toolroom grinding operations.
  • Jig grinder, which as the name implies, has a variety of uses when finishing jigs, dies, and fixtures. Its primary function is in the realm of grinding holes and pins. It can also be used for complex surface grinding to finish work started on a mill.

在超過一世紀前,以鉑和銥打造的「完美」千克原器,成為了舉世衡量一公斤重量的標準。然而,這個儲存在美國Maryland州Gaithersburg市地下40呎深,儲存在恆溫恆濕控制保險箱內,大小如一杯義式咖啡的鉑銥合金圓柱-「第20號公斤」卻只是「近乎」完美。

《Los Angeles Times》 報導,在 100多年前,「20號」和其他的公斤原器在法國被製造出來。然而隨著時間過去,這些圓柱體間出現了細微的差異,平均差大概在50微克(百萬分之一公克),約一粒細鹽的重量。

在講求精確的物理界,度量重量、重力的標準公斤,就和測量電力的安培、質量的摩爾,和量子力學的代表-普朗克常數 (Planck's constant)一樣。但也因公斤的標準概念如此普遍,以至於如何定義 1公斤有多重?恐怕沒人知道。

美國國家標準和技術研究院(NIST)是負責保存管理第20號公斤的機構。其物理學家 Zeina Jabbour說道:「我該怎麼相信它?」

現在公斤是國際單位制中最後一個以物理物體為基礎的單位,其他單位如長度的公尺或時間的秒,都已經被科學家使用其他自然性質或科學常數來定義了。比如 1秒鐘是以銫分子的振動次數來定義的。

由於鉑銥合金的公斤原器難以保持絕對穩定的物理性,因此全球學者競相研究,想要嘗試用別的方式來重新定義。

18世紀時,全世界的重量單位及測量方式有數十萬種,光是法國境內就有25萬種不同的測量單位。

美國 Northwestern University歷史學家Ken Alder說,啟蒙時代和法國大革命激盪出統一標準的想法,哲學家們認為,唯有人們也能自行計算物品的重量和價格,才有自由的可能。

法國政府首在1795年創造了「公斤」概念,將其定義為 1公斤蒸餾水在融冰溫度時的重量。1895年時,17個國家國際權度會議上簽署了「公尺條約」,將公斤訂定為國際標準。

公斤的標準原器是枚 90%鉑與 10%銥的合金圓柱體,在1878年製造完成,稱之為「Le Grand K」國際原器。在它被製造出來的數十年間,又有90枚同樣的原器被製造出來送往世界各國,用以校準工業與科學領域的度量衡。

大約每50年,這些原器就要送回位於法國Sevres的國際計量局,與原始的國際原器做比對。在1950年左右的第一次比對中,科學家發現,國際原器與其他原器間,存在微小的重量差異,他們很關注這個問題,但不知道是為什麼。

在科學家了解到原器重量不一致的問題後,便嘗試以其他定義方式來取代這個人工製造的金屬塊。

比如公尺的定義,在1889年至1960年間,是用鉑銥合金製成的國際公尺原器做標準,但在1960年後,則改以氪氣體發出光波波長的數倍為標準。到1983年,又改用光速為標準,以光速 1秒可行進 299,792,458公尺的距離,換算出 1公尺的標準長度。

在1990年左右,最後一次公斤原器比對後發現,有些原器重量已經增加了 132微克,有些則減輕 665微克。而保存在美國的第20號原器則重了18微克。

可是,科學家們也無法斷定,到底是原始國際原器的重量變了,還是其他原器的重量變了。或許是圓柱體中的鉑吸收了環境中的水銀;或許是分解的氣體離開了圓柱;或許是用水和乙醚清潔圓柱,才改變了它的重量。但原因究竟為何無人知曉,這些都只是猜測。

至少有 6個公斤原器已因戰爭、保存不良及其他原因而佚失。關於重新定義公斤,有 2派不同的新理論想法。其一是由趨近完美的矽球體中的20秭 (20兆兆;20億億億) 個原子數量來定義;另一種則是測量可讓 1公斤重量與重力平衡所需的電流。但這兩種方式都各有複雜之處。

在NIST裡,一個密閉房間外的角落中,主持公斤定義研究的物理學家 Richard Steiner拿出身上的皮夾、脫下手表,放置在一張木桌上。因為房內的磁場很強,能輕易消除信用卡磁條上的資料,或是停止手表的運作。

這位53歲、髮絲飄白的物理學家在23年前來到NIST,並在14年前加入此專案。他拉開厚重的門踏入房間,房間由光亮的銅板所保護,能隔絕無線電波與雷達,電線環繞在牆上。

在房間中央嗡嗡作響的,是一台笨重的機器, Steiner希望能由此發展出新的公斤標準-一個雙層的裝置,中間放有一對超導磁石,大小像消防隊用的水管瞄子。

這個機器名稱叫做「瓦特天平(watt balance)」,但 Steiner喜歡稱它為「我的 UFO」。

這 個定義公斤的方法跟量子力學的普朗克常數有關。只要科學家有電流、磁場和普朗克常數這 3項資料,就可以精確計算物品的重量。問題是 Steiner的機器太敏感,遠方的地震、附近辦公大樓的汽車,還有潮汐都會晃動到它。會導致錯誤的因素來源約有20個,包括了空氣的浮力、電流外漏和局 部地心引力的改變等。

德國國家計量研究院物理學家Peter Becker的方法則較簡單:數原子。這個方法主要是透過計算某種特定元素的原子數量來定義公斤。

Becker的希望寄託於 2個約槌球大小的銀色球體,它們是由最純的矽所製成,造價 320萬美元。它們是世上最圓的人造物,以30奈米的製程製造。

63歲、留著灰色山羊鬍的Becker自1970年代起就參與 X光光學研究。而1990年代中期,公斤原器問題開始引起學界重視時,他和他的團隊就想到,他們的研究應該會有幫助。

原子本身的重量是無法單獨計算的。但Becker和他的團隊International Avogadro Project,使用 X光來得知原子間的距離。再參考該物體的重量和使用的雷射類型,就可以得知原子的數量: 1公斤的矽有約20秭個原子。

只是,這種計算方式需要非常規律的原子排列模式。後來他們選用了矽,就是因為矽原子的圓形排列模式接近完美。

在過去14年的實驗中,他們用天然矽製造了約20個圓球。雖然計算很精確,但仍然失敗了,大部份是因為天然的矽含有多種同位素,而它們的排列空間並不相同。

後來他們了解到,材質愈純愈好,最好是完全由同一種矽所組成的晶體。

俄羅斯核能部(Nuclear Ministry)與超純材質學院(Institute for Ultra pure Material) 製造出一種大型矽晶,而德國的水晶成長學院(Institute of Crystal Growth)將其重複融化以去除雜質,最後得到由99.99%矽28(最常見的矽同位素)所組成的晶體。

在十數載的努力後,以上這兩種測量理論可說是精確得令人驚訝,但它們卻也難以證明其結果的精準度。

各個鉑銥公斤原器與原始國際原器的差別平均為50微克。但在幾個月前,一個英國團隊自行設計的瓦特天平,所產生出的一公斤數值卻與此非常不同,沒有任何一個實驗室能解釋其原因。

其中的差異似乎讓Becker的原子計算理論更有希望。他說,團隊在明年使用新矽球體時,可以做更良好的計算。「我們的目標是將(不確定性)因素的影響減少到10種以下,並有信心可以做到。」不過瓦特天平也有它的優勢,若最終實驗數字可以信賴,各國並不需要自行製造超純矽球體做為新的標準原器。

因此,尋找如何定義公斤的任務仍在繼續。

不過,就算任何一種理論成功,科學家們有朝一日仍會試著追求更精確的測量方式。就在 3月,NIST宣布了 2個新原子鐘的研發成功,它們的精確性凌駕目前的原子鐘之上。現在的原子鐘每8000萬年會慢 1秒鐘,而新原子鐘超過10億年才會慢不到 1秒。

「永遠不可能完美。」 Steiner說。也永遠會有更精確的工具及研究在等待著科學家們。

近代的な道具としては、木工旋盤丸ノコルーターなどが挙げられよう。

Along with stone, mud, and animal parts, wood was certainly one of the first materials worked by primitive human beings. Microwear analysis of the Mousterian stone tools used by the Neanderthals show that many were used to work wood. Indeed, the development of civilization was closely tied to the development of increasingly greater degrees of skill in working these materials.

Among early finds of wooden tools are the worked sticks from Kalambo Falls, Clacton-on-Sea and Lehringen. The spears from Schöningen (Germany) provide some of the first examples of wooden hunting gear. Flint tools were used for carving. Since Neolithic times, carved wooden vessels are known, for example from the Linear Pottery culture wells at Kückhofen and Eythra. Examples of Bronze Age wood-carving include trees worked into coffins from northern Germany and Denmark, and wooden folding-chairs. The site of Fellbach-Schmieden in Germany has provided fine examples of wooden animal statues from the Iron Age. Wooden idols from the La Tène period are known from a sanctuary at the source of the Seine in France.

Two ancient civilizations that used woodworking were the Egyptians and the Chinese. Woodworking is depicted in many ancient Egyptian drawings, and a considerable amount of ancient Egyptian furniture (such as stools, chairs, tables, beds, chests) has been preserved in tombs. As well, the inner coffins found in the tombs were also made of wood. The metal used by the Egyptians for woodworking tools was originally copper and eventually, after 2000 BC bronze as ironworking was unknown until much later.[1] Commonly used woodworking tools included axes, adzes, chisels, pull saws, and bow drills. Mortise and tenon joints are attested from the earliest Predynastic period. These joints were strengthened using pegs, dowels and leather or cord lashings. Animal glue came to be used only in the New Kingdom period.[2] Ancient Egyptians invented the art of veneering and used varnishes whose composition is not known as finishes. Although different native acacias were used, as was the wood from the local sycomore and tamarisk trees, deforestation in the Nile valley resulted in the need for importation of wood, notably cedar, but also Aleppo pine, boxwood and oak, starting from the Second Dynasty.[3]

The progenitors of Chinese woodworking are considered to be Lu Ban (魯班) and his wife Lady Yun, from the Spring and Autumn Period. Lu Ban is said to have brought the plane, chalkline, and other tools to China. His teachings are supposedly left behind in the book Lu Ban Jing (魯班經, "Manuscript of Lu Ban"), although it was written some 1500 years after his death. This book is filled largely with descriptions of dimensions for use in building various items—such as flower pots, tables, altars, etc.—and also contains extensive instructions concerning Feng Shui. It mentions almost nothing of the intricate glueless and nailless joinery for which Chinese furniture was so famous.

Historically, woodworkers relied upon the woods native to their region, until transportation and trade innovations made more exotic woods available to the craftsman. Woods can be sorted into three basic types, hardwoods, typified by tight grain and often derived from deciduous trees, softwoods, typically from evergreen trees, and man-made materials, such as plywood and MDF.

青図あおず)は、図面の一種。建築土木図面の多くはトレーシングペーパーに作図され、ジアゾ複写機(青焼機)で複製される。その複製を青図という。
図面は完成予想図と言う意味を持ち、「青図を描く」とは完成予想をするという意味でも使われる。

近年、手書きで図面を書くことが少なくなり、CADで描かれる機会が増えるにつれて、複写せずとも複数枚出力すれば事足りるようになり、配布される図面が「白」(普通紙コピー、PPC)になることが増えつつある。ジアゾ複写機も現在はRICOHのみが製造販売しているだけで、実質的に製造されていないのと同様で、製図台や定規とともに現場事務所からなくなりつつあるものであるといえる。

青 図を焼くには、原紙か第二原図を感光紙の上に載せ複写機に入れる作業が必要であり、露光程度は速度で持って調整される。また、感光紙の感度により 速く複写できる感光紙もあるが、感度の高い感光紙は保存状態が悪いと感光してしまった状態となり使用できなくなる。この状態を「風邪を引いた」と呼ばれる ことがある。

青図は鮮明度が低く、手書きの数字などが判読不能であることが多いものの、図面の寸法そのままで読図できるので、ものの大きさが重要であった。CAD図であっても、寸法の表記を信用することなく測長が必要な場合もある。

A blueprint is a type of paper-based reproduction usually of a technical drawing documenting an architecture or an engineering design. More generally, the term "blueprint" has come to be used to refer to any detailed plan.

The blueprint process is essentially the cyanotype process developed by the British astronomer and photographer Sir John Herschel in 1842.[1] The photosensitive compound, a solution of ammonium ferric citrate and potassium ferricyanide, is coated onto paper. Areas of the compound exposed to strong light are converted to insoluble blue ferric ferrocyanide, or Prussian blue. The soluble chemicals are washed off with water leaving a light-stable print.

A similar process was used to produce printing proofs for offset printing.

Various base materials have been used for blueprints. Paper was a common choice; for more durable prints linen was sometimes used, but with time, the linen prints would shrink slightly. To combat this problem, printing on imitation vellum and, later, mylar was implemented.

For almost a century blueprint was the only low cost process available for copying drawings. Once invented, no technical development was required; the process was put to widespread use immediately, notably in shipbuilding and the manufacture of railway locomotives and rolling stock.

The coated material ready for use has a shelf life of two days. Every industrial area had one or two small independent suppliers who made blueprint coated materials to order. These suppliers also provided a copying service for small users.

The normal use was to have a wooden frame with a spring loaded back, similar to a picture frame with a glass front. The drawing would be traced in India ink on tracing paper or tracing cloth. Indoors, coated paper and tracing would be loaded into the frame which was then brought out to sunlight. Exposure time varied from less than a minute to about an hour under an overcast sky. The operator could see the blue image appear through the tracing, when ready the frame was brought indoors. The material was then washed in running water to remove the unexposed coating, then dried. It gave a clearly legible copy of the drawing with a white line and dark blue background. This copy possessed unlimited resistance to light and resistance to water that was as good as the substrate.

The diazo document copying process progressively took over from blueprint during the period 1935 to 1950.

[edit] Replacements for blueprints

Traditional blueprints have largely been replaced by more modern, less expensive printing methods and digital displays. In the early 1940s, cyanotype blueprint began to be supplanted by diazo prints or whiteprints, which have blue lines on a white background; thus these drawings are also called blue-lines or bluelines. Other comparable dye-based prints are known as blacklines.

Diazo prints remain in use in some applications but in many cases have been replaced by Xerographic print processes similar to standard copy machine technology using toner on bond paper. More recently, designs created using Computer-Aided Design techniques may be transferred as a digital file directly to a computer printer or plotter; in some applications paper is avoided altogether and work and analysis is done directly from digital displays.

As print and display technology has advanced, the traditional term "blueprint" has continued to be used informally to refer to each type of image.

Although the industry has converted to the whiteprinting system, the companies have primarily stayed the same. Among the largest as of 2006 is NRI, a ReproMAX founding partner, with eight offices in New York, Boston, Philadelphia and Washington, DC, and BP Independent Reprographics, which is the result of several mergers and buyouts between Independent Blueprinting, Crown Reproductions, and The Blueprint Company[citation needed].

With the advent in large, conglomerate, corporate entities, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find the traditional, family-owned blueprint shop. Most small to medium-size "blueprinters" are now owned by much larger corporations like American Reprographics Company (they alone own over 235 print shops in the US and Canada).[1]

However, there are still some truly independent shops. Among them are University Reprographics in Seattle[citation needed], and Bill's Blueprint in Everett.[2]

A similar network has been built up as a connection of independent reprographers, as members of ReproMAX. As a result, ReproMAX has grown to be the largest association of reprographics companies, with over 230 current network partners in North America and Western Europe.[3] The electronic planroom and document management solution for ReproMAX is available as ReproMAX/DFS.

A machinist is a person who uses machine tools to make or modify parts, primarily metal parts, a process known as machining. This is accomplished by using machine tools to cut away excess material much as a woodcarver cuts away excess wood to produce his work. In addition to metal, the parts may be made of many other kinds of materials, such as plastic or wood products. The goal of these cutting operations is to produce a part that conforms to a set of specifications, usually in the form of engineering drawings commonly known as blueprints.

Within the title machinist are other specialty titles that refer to specific skills that may be more highly developed to meet the needs of a particular job position. Some examples of these specialty titles are fitter, turning hand, mill hand, and grinder. Also, there are titles that are related but actually are a further development of machinist skills such as tool and die maker, tool maker, trim die maker, die sinker, patternmaker and mold maker. These latter titles are also more commonly found in specialized areas of industry.

A fitter and turner refers to a person who manufactures mechanical parts (turner) and assembles (fitter) those parts together to manufacture a mechanical device.

[edit] The role of the machinist in manufacturing

A machinist is usually called upon when a part needs to be produced from a material by cutting. Such a part may be unique or may be needed in the thousands. This could include a machinery part for a production line or generally anything that can be made from metal or plastic. Producing a part will often require several steps and more than one machine tool. Each machine tool is designed to play a specific role in cutting away excess material. When large numbers of parts are needed, production planning is required to map out the most logical route using primarily computer numerically controlled (CNC) machines.

CNC machines are becoming the standard due to their speed, precision, flexibility, and reduced downtime while changing jobs. Production runs consisting of large numbers of parts are more cost effective (in a local and narrow sense) and commonly referred to as production work in the trade. Conversely, small production runs are sometimes referred to as prototype or jobbing work although with the advent of theory of constraints and lean manufacturing, this perspective may be changing.

Production engineers use blueprints and engineering drawings to produce detailed specifications of the part, especially its geometry (shape), then decide on a strategy to make it. Machine tools are then configured by the machinist or toolsetter and production commences. The machinist works closely with the quality department in order to insure the original specifications are maintained in the part produced.

[edit] Materials commonly encountered by machinists

A machinist is to metal as a carpenter is to wood. The most common materials that machinists make parts from are steel, aluminum, brass, copper, and various alloys of these materials. Other less common materials such as vanadium, zinc, lead, or manganese are often used as alloying elements for the most common materials. Materials that machinists work with occasionally are various plastics, rubber, glass, and wood products. Rarely, machinists also work with exotic and refractory metals. The term exotic metals is a general term describing out of the ordinary, rare or special purpose metals. A synonym might be space-age. A list of exotic metals might include, but is not limited to, titanium, beryllium, vanadium, chromium, molybdenum and tungsten, as well as special high-temperature metal alloys like Inconel (sometimes called superalloys). Very often the meaning of the term suggests the need for specialized handling and/or tooling in order to be able to machine them effectively.

While the foregoing were primarily the materials that a machinist would be cutting, the cutters that the machinist uses must be harder and tougher than the materials to be cut. The materials in the cutters a machinist uses are most commonly high speed steel, tungsten carbide, ceramics, Borazon, and diamond.

Machinists usually work to very small tolerances, usually within 0.010" or 0.25mm (more commonly expressed as +/-.005" or +/-0.13mm) , and sometimes at tolerances as low as 0.0001" (0.0025 mm) for specialty operations. A machinist deals with all facets of shaping, cutting and some aspects of forming metal, except for welding, which is typically a separate trade. The operations most commonly performed by machinists are milling, drilling, turning, and grinding. There are other more specialized operations that a machinist will less frequently be called upon to perform such as honing, keyseating, lapping, and polishing, to name a few.

The tools that a machinist is expected to be proficient with fall into 6 broad categories:

  • Measuring tools: The measuring tools come several basic varieties:
    • Comparison tools such as adjustable parallels and plain calipers,
    • Direct reading tools such as rules, scales, and vernier calipers,
    • Micrometer tools based on screw threads,
    • Indicator tools based on clockwork gear movements,
    • Electronic measuring tools based on tranducers. Many of these are digital versions of their mechanical predecessors, as with a digital caliper.
  • Hand tools: The hand tools are the usual complement of tools found in a complete auto mechanic's set except that auto specialty tools would be absent and some outsized tools would likely be present, such as 1 1/2" (38mm) open end wrench.
  • Machine tools: The machine tools have undergone a dramatic shift in the last 20 years. Manual machines have given way to Computer Numerically Controlled Machines (CNCs). For clarity's sake a categorization based on the historical groupings will be offered. Each of these groupings has been altered by the advent of CNCs and the CNCs meld some groups and blur the lines between others. In the past, the most common machine tools fall into 4 categories:
    • Drilling machines, bench, floor, radial, and horizontal
    • milling machines, horizontal, vertical, and boring mills
    • Turning machines, engine lathe, turret lathe, vertical turret lathe, vertical boring mill
    • Grinding machines, surface, cylindrical, centerless, universal
  • Workholders: The workholders may include vises, chucks, indexing accessories, pallets, specialty jigs or fixtures, and faceplates
  • Toolholders: The toolholders may include chucks, cutter adapters, cutter extension, tool posts, indexable turrets, box tools, quick change adapters, arbors, and collets.
  • Cutting tools: Cutting tools include various milling cutters such as face mills, shell mills, endmills, and form cutters; various drills, reamers, taps, countersinks, counterbores, and core drills; various turning tools, form tools, and threading tools; various grinding wheels distinguished by their geometry, bond, grit size, and compound.

En såg är ett verktyg för att kapa och klyva material. Har oftast ett handtag, men kan ha flera. Det finns flera typer av sågar. De har olika användningsområden. Det vanligaste är sågar som avsedda för att såga trä. Sågar avsedda för metall finns att tillgå för vissa ändamåll, en av dessa har benämningen bågfil. Det finns också ett större antal sågar som är motordrivna, motorsågen är en av dessa som är avsedd för att fälla och aptera träd. Det finns dock även andra varianter på motordrivna sågar. Bland dessa kan nämnas bandsågen som oftast finns t ex i en slöjdsal i en skola. Numera finns de flesta typer av sågar som tidigare var handverktyg som motormanuella verktyg. Där elektricitet finns tillgänglig används ofta elanslutna verktyg men det blir allt vanligare med sladdlösa verktyg som drivs med energi från uppladdningsbart batteri.

  • Gradsåg används vid sammanfogningsmetoden gradning.
  • Grensåg används för att såga av grenar i träd, kan vara fäst i ett teleskopiskt skaft.
  • Hålsåg används för att göra hål, ofta i trä eller plast samt metall. Hålsågens blad är cirkelformat.
  • Japansåg används när man vill ha ett rent snitt. Sågbladet är tunnare än flera andra sågar, och sågar endast när man drar sågen mot sig.
  • Lövsåg har samma användning som en figursåg.
  • Ryggsåg har förstärkning av en skena på ryggsidan. Används som geringssåg oftast tillsammans med en geringslåda.
  • Kranbalksåg användes för till att såga upp timmer för hand, stocken låg på bockar och en man stod över och en under när man sågade med en kranbalksåg.

  • Sticksåg är första hand en kontursåg för trä metall och plastmaterial.

Rautasaha

Saha on työkalu, jolla lastuamalla leikataan puuta, metallia tai muita materiaaleja. Siinä on hammastettu (sahalaitainen) terä, joka liikkuessa kohdetta vasten leikkaa sitä. Käsisahoissa liike on edestakainen ja eurooppalaiset sahat tyypillisesti leikkaavat sahaa työnnettäessä. Saha voi myös leikata vetäessä tai jopa molempiin suuntiin. Joissain konesahoissa, mm. pyörösahoissa ja vannesahoissa, terän liike on aina samansuuntainen kappaletta vastaan.

Leikkaustapahtuman kannalta sahan tärkein ominaisuus on hampaiden geometria. Hampaan leikkaava sivu voi olla positiivisessa, nolla- tai negatiivisessa kulmassa suhteessa leikattavaan aineeseen. Toinen hyvin tärkeä tekijä on hampaan koko. Hampaan kokoa mitataan yleensä laskemalla kuinka monta hammasta on yhden tuuman matkalla (tpi - teeth per inch). Pienihampaiset sahat, ts. joilla on suuri tpi-arvo, leikkaavat hienoa pintaa ja repivät vain vähän materiaalia. Isohampaiset sahat taas leikkaavat nopeammin. Kolmas tekijä sahan geometriassa on ns. hampaiden haritus. Sahan hampaita on käännetty sivuille, jolloin saha leikkaa leveämmän uran kuin sahan materiaalipaksuus. Harituksen hyötynä on sahan vähäisempi jumittuminen sahausuraan. Vetosaha on saha, jolla sahataan vetämällä eikä työntämällä. Siksi terä ja sahausura voi olla hyvin ohut, joten vetosaha säästää voimia ja on hyödyllinen tarkkuutta vaativissa töissä.

Perinteinen metsätöissä käytetty puukehyksinen pokasaha. Saha on purettavissa kuljetusta varten. Metsuri saattoi itse rakentaa sahansa puuosat.

Käsisahoja on hyvin monta eri tyyppiä, mm. timpurin saha (karkea sahaus), selkäsaha, lehtisaha, listasaha (puusepän työt), sekä oksasaha ja jännesaha hyvin karkeaan puun sahaukseen. Metallin käsisahaukseen on myös muutamia erilaisia sahatyyppejä.

Eräsaha: halkosahan terään on tehty puinen kaari. Kuvan saha on luultavasti partiolaisten työtä Hyvinkäältä.

Retkeilyvarusteena sahasta voidaan kuljettaa myös pelkkää terää esimerkiksi kaksinkertaisen vyön sisällä. Kaari tai kahvapuut otetaan luonnosta.

Konekäyttöisiä sahoja on kahta perustyyppiä: siirrettäviksi tarkoitetut työkalut ja kiinteästi asennetut koneet ja sahauspöydät.
