寶石（寶石）是被切割、擦潤、拋光的礦物、石料、土化物體，作為收集品、收藏品或穿著裝飾之用。有些脆弱或軟的寶石只能收集，不能穿著，像許多博物館徵求的菱錳礦。寶石最重要的珍貴之處是其完美的外表，所以被擦傷後喪失價值。有些合成寶石被用來仿冒或偽裝作為其他的較珍貴寶石，例如二氧化鋯石是一種合成的鑽石仿冒品。這些仿冒品外表和反光和真正的寶石看起來一樣，但是沒有它們的化學和物理特色。有的人工寶石是和自然接的寶石成分相同，例如人工合成的鑽石、紅寶石、藍寶石、綠寶石。合成寶石中剛玉（包括紅寶石和藍寶石）比較常見，所以比天然的便宜；但是合成鑽石質量不純淨，只能用於工業使用，不能作為飾物。
作為寶石的礦物一般顏色鮮艷柔和，光澤和花紋美觀，結構均勻，折光率強，硬度較大，化學成分穩定。人類從自古以來就將寶石加工作為飾物。目前世界上3000多種礦物中，有230種以上可以作為寶石，但應用最廣的一般只有20-30種。世界寶石資源主要分佈在亞洲南部、非洲南部、美洲、澳洲以及俄羅斯。
