Dijamant je najtvrđi mineral u prirodi. Zbog toga se koristi za rezanje, brušenje i poliranje drugih mekših materijala - upotreba u industrijske svrhe. Na Mosovoj skali tvrdoće zauzima najviše mjesto sa tvrdoćom broj 10.

Rezanjem i poliranjem dijamanata dobija se brilijant koji se koristi kao ukras. Poliranje se izvodi dijamantskom prašinom. Pošto se zna da nastaje u atmosferi gdje vladaju veliki pritisak i temperatura, danas je usavršena proizvodnja umjetnih dijamanata koji se koriste isključivo u industrijske svrhe.

Kopa se u rudnicima i najveći svjetski proizvođači dijamanata su Rusija i Južnoafrička Republika.
