钢轨及钢轨配件实际上是异型型钢，钢轨分重轨和轻轨两种、钢轨规格用每米长公称重量表示。
我国把重轨和轻轨作为两大独立品种分类，钢轨（起重机用轨或吊车用轨除外）的规格是用kg/m 来表示，例如：18kg/m,50kg/m等。每米重量小于或等于30kg的钢轨属于轻轨，每米重量大于30kg的钢轨属于重轨。钢轨要承受机车、车辆的压力及冲击载荷，必须具有足够的强度、硬度和韧性以及良好的焊接性能。钢轨还按抗拉强度的不同分为三个等级，有普通级钢轨（抗拉强度为586- 785MPa），耐磨级钢轨（抗拉强度为883-1030MPa）以及特级钢轨（抗拉强度为1079-1226MPa）三种。
1. 重轨--------每米重量大于24kg的钢轨。
2. 轻轨--------每米重量不大于24kg的钢轨。
3. 重轨配件----包括重轨用鱼尾板垫板，不包括道钉等配件及轻轨配件。
起重机钢轨--用于起重机铺设的轨道。每米重量比一般重轨重
重轨：每米公称重量大于30公斤的钢轨，属于重轨，重轨以分为一般钢轨和起重机轨两种。
一般钢轨，指铺设铁路干线、专用线、弯道及隧道用轨。其中，标准轨长度有12.50米和25.00米两种，铺设弯道曲线轨，长度稍短，有12.46米、12.42米和24.96米、24.92米等几种，一般钢轨的规格为38、43、45、50、60（千克/米）。
起重机轨是用作起重机大车及小车用的特种截面钢轨、也称吊车轨，标准长度为9、9.5、10、10.5、11、11.5、12、12.5八种。常见规格为QU70、QU80、QU100、QU120后面数字表示轨头宽度。
钢轨需要承受机车的压力、摩擦和冲击载荷,要求有足够的强度、硬度及韧性，质量要求较高，必须检验其力学性能，并进行低倍组织检验和落锤试验等。
表1和表2为铁路钢轨和起重机轨用钢牌号和化学成分及机械性能。
