Перший підводний човен був побудований для короля Англії Джеймса І голландським ученим Корнеліусом ван Дреббелем (1572-1633) у 1620.

Морський підводний човен або торпедний човен "Ґімнот" (Gymnote) був спущений на воду Францією в 1887.

Під час Першої світової війни з'явилися підводні човни з дизельним двигуном для руху на поверхні, і електричним для руху під водою. До дизельного двигуна підключали генератор, який виробляв електрику для підзарядки батарей.

Сучасні підводні човни в основному атомні.
