Ватрено оружје или митраљез је назив за аутоматско које је у стању у кратком периоду испалити неколико узастопних хитаца.
Име му долази од Mitrailleuse, једног од првих модела кога су Французи без неког великог успеха применили у француско-пруском рату. Каснији модели, поготово Maxim, су се показало далеко ефикаснијим у Првом светском рату те се управо њима често приписује велики број људских жртава.
Митраљези се најчешће, с обзиром на тежину, домет или калибар деле на:
- лаке или пушкомитраљезе;
- средње (понекад назване митраљезима опште намене);
- тешке
- супертешке, најчешће кориштене као противавионска артиљерија.
