Maŝin-pafilo estas portebla aŭ loke muntebla aŭtomata etkalibra pulvopafilo ĝenerale planita por rapida pafado fusil-kuglojn el pafaĵo-zono aŭ grand-enhaveca kartoĉujo, ordinare po plurcent kuglojn en minuto. Antaŭ aŭtomateco, maŝin-pafiloj estis funkciigataj per aliaj rimedoj, ekzemple per permana movado krankon.
Ĝi estis evoluigita fine de la 19-a jarcento, kio ebligis rapidan amasmurdadon de homoj.
Ekzistas tri tipoj de modernaj maŝinpafiloj:
- malpeza maŝinpafilo aŭ mitralo kun forka apogilo, funkciigata de unu soldato. La pafaĵo estas konservata en arka ujo kaj uzas mezfortajn kuglojn.
- meza aŭ ĝeneralcela maŝinpafilo kun forko aŭ tripiedo, la pafaĵoj estas en kartoĉrubando. La kartoĉo estas forta
- peza maŝinpafilo per akva malvarmigado, kun tripiedo, kartoĉrubando. Ĝin funkciigis soldatoj. (Nun oni taksas peza maŝinpafilo tiujn aŭtomatajn pafilojn, kiuj eligas kartoĉon de 12,7 mm aŭ pli.
Plimulto de la maŝinpafiloj pafas po 500–1000-foje en minuto. La modernaj pafiloj pafas daŭre ĝis oni povas postplenigi per kartoĉrubandoj.
La pafiloj repleniĝas per la retropuŝa forto de la pafado.
