1、量具、刃具用钢：碳含量在0.75—1.50%范围，金合、总量大都在5%以下。耐磨性比碳量相近的碳素工具钢高，淬透性也较好，一般可在油中淬火，热处理变形比碳素工具钢小，回火稳定性及切削速度也比碳素工具钢高，可用来制造各种机用刀具和比较精密的量具。
2、耐冲击工具用钢：为具有一定的冲击韧性，其含碳量在0.35-0.65%范围内，淬火后有高的硬度(HRC50)以上和耐磨性。适于制造受冲击负荷严重的工具。
3、冷作模具用钢：碳含量较高，大多在0.85%以上，甚至2%以上，以获得很高的硬度(HRC60以上)和耐磨性，Cr12有较深的淬硬层，耐磨性强。冷挤压模具用钢要求有优良的强度和韧性，因此发展了低碳高速钢，如6W6Mo5Cr4V。
