焦炭并不是在自然界中存在的天然物质，而是由煤在高温的情况下碳化（carbonize）而生成的；也可以说，真正用于鼓风炉冶炼生铁的原料是煤。不过因为煤是一种自然物质含有大量不纯物，不能直接使用，所以先经过炼焦（coking）处理，变成焦炭再使用。现在我们来讨论一下煤：
（1）煤的成因及贮藏：煤是上古时代的植物，由于地壳的变动被埋藏在地下，长年受地壳压力和地心热力的影响逐渐碳化而成的。由于碳化程度的不同而产生不同等级的煤。根据地质学家大约的占计，世界上煤的贮藏量约有1650万亿吨左右，但是在这些贮藏的煤中能用于制造炼钢用焦炭的煤并不很多。世界上主要产煤的国家有美国、苏俄、加拿大、中国、澳洲、德国、英国、南非等。
（2）煤的等级：煤可按其碳化程度的不同而划分不同的品位。碳化程度高的煤含碳量高，含有灰分及水份的量少。依照碳化程度的增高可将煤分成泥煤（peat）、褐煤（lignite）、亚烟煤（subbituminous）、烟煤（bituminous）无烟煤（anthracite）。表(一) 是一个典型的各品级煤所含水份和灰分的分析结果：由这个分析结果，可以知道煤的成份变化非常大，因此在商业上的价格也就有很大的不同。
为了商业上易于评定媒的价值，我们将煤按照其成份来划分成许多等级（rank），这种等级是根据固定碳量（fixed carbon），挥发物量（volatilematter）及发热量（calorific value）三项数值来评定的。表(二)是一个美国材料试验标准协会（ASTM）所定的等级分类表。
通常我们用实用分析（Proximate analysis）和元素分析（Ultimate analysis）来测定煤的化学成分。实用分析测定煤的挥发物量，固定碳量及灰分三项。元素分析就是测定其中碳（Carbon）、氢（Hydrogen）、氮（Nitrogen）、氧（Oxygen）及硫（Sulphur）五种元素的含量。根据上述两种分析的结果及标准的等级分类，表可判定煤的等级：表(三)是一个典型的煤等级和分析结果表：
（3）能用于制造炼钢用焦炭的煤，不但希望它固定碳含量高，灰分含量少及硫含量少之外，而且还有两个重要条件那就是希望它的粘结力（cakingability）及焦结力（coking ability）要高。
基于上述这些的条件，能用于制造冶金焦（metallurgical coke）──炼钢用焦炭──的煤仅烟煤最适合，主要的原因是因为烟煤才有足够的粘结力。
