製鉄所の高炉から取り出された鉄は、今日では銑鉄（せんてつ）と呼ばれ、鋳鉄とは鋳物材料として供給される銑鉄（鋳物用銑）を意味するようになりました。かつて町工場などに数多く見られたキューポラは、銑鉄を溶かして鋳物をつくるための小型の溶銑炉（ようせんろ）です。
鋳鉄製の鉄瓶やストーブなどは、ハンマーなどで強く叩くと割れてしまいます。鋳鉄は硬いがもろいという性質をもつ鉄なのです。割れてできた破面が灰白色～ 暗灰色の鈍い輝きをもつのは、含有する炭素によるものです。一般に鉄と呼ばれている金属材料は、鉄と炭素の合金で、炭素含有量が多くなるほど硬くもろくな り、少なくなるほど軟らかくて粘り強い性質をもつようになります。鋳鉄の炭素含有量は約2％以上で、約0.02％以下のものは軟鉄と呼ばれます。鋳鉄と軟 鉄の中間の炭素含有量をもつ鉄が鋼です。硬さと粘り強さをあわせもつため、刃物材料や建築材や構造材などに多用されています。
昔は鉄と 鋼とは別の物質とみなされていました。熱した鉄を鍛え上げていくと、最後に純粋物質である鋼が残ると考えていたのです。この常識に疑問を抱いたのは、18 世紀フランスのレオミュールです。さまざまな実験を通して、鋼の材質は鉄が何らかの物質を吸収することによって生まれると説明しました。また、スウェーデ ンのベリマンは鉄には黒鉛（炭素の結晶）と似た物質が含まれ、その量は鋳鉄、鋼、鍛鉄（錬鉄）などによって異なることを明らかにしました。
