很多人都有这样的经历和感受：在购物的环境中，自己所选的翡翠饰品颜色是多么美观，多么润泽，但怎么购买后自己使用饰品时，当时的感觉就减少了许多了呢?
这 实际上并不奇怪，翡翠，尤其是高档翡翠，是半透明或透明度较好的物品，它与其他宝石、其他物品一样，其本来的颜色在不同的光源、不同的光源强度、不同的照 明条件和环境下，给人眼的感觉是有差异的，况且因两件翡翠的内部结构不同(疏密程度及不同的内含物等)，即便是相同的颜色，在光的某种照射方式下，人眼看 起来所得到的感觉也是会不同的。
对于翡翠饰品颜色的变幻，传统的翡翠界有“通液”和“察液”之说。所谓“通液”，就是翡翠的颜色平放着观 看，不美丽不醒目，但拿起来对着灯光(或自然光)照射，则翠绿醒目，相当美观。翡翠界对这种翡翠的评价不高，其价值也较低；相反，另有一种翡翠的颜色，拿 起来时用光照射，翠绿色被光冲散，不很美观，若将其平放着观看，则绿得可爱，很美丽，这就叫“察液”。翡翠商界对这样的翡翠评价很高，其价格也很贵。
“通 液”和“察液”的说法，主要是对翡翠绿色的中高档翡翠而言。对于其他颜色的翡翠，虽然也有“通液”、“察液”的现象，但不太明显，因此也就不被人们所注 意。另外，在选购—件翡翠饰品时，对其颜色、透明度的观察、感觉，不但要在购物环境中进行，更应在自然光下观察和感觉，以避免因光照条件、环境的不同产生 较大的视觉误差而后晦莫及。
