在位移法典型方程中，每个系数都是单位结点位移所引起的附加约束的反力，它的大小与结构刚度有关；刚度愈大则反力也愈大。故把系数称为结构的刚度系数，把典型方程称为刚度方程，把位移法也叫刚度法。

计算系数和自由项时，可根据单位弯矩图、 以及荷载弯矩图,取隔离体,由平衡条件求得系数和自由项.现以图8-8（a）所示刚架中的系数和自由项具体计算说明如下。
计算附加刚臂中由Z1=1，Z2=1及荷载单独作用下产生的反力矩时，从图8-8（d）、（e）、（c）中取结点B为隔离体，运用力矩平衡方程可求得有关刚臂中的反力矩系数和自由项：
